Looks like an old time safe placed into a cabinet. Does the safe sit flat on the ground or is it on wheels. Either way like you say is is heavier than sin. It is quite a bargain and properly filled it shouldn't be able to be moved to easily. Wished that I had one like it in the cabinet you have.
They used to do quite of bit of hiding of safes in the late 1800's in a manner such as you have.

No wheels. Flat bottom. I like the locking wood door to hide the locking steel door.

I cleaned the grime off the outside and have it at the locksmith. I dropped it off Wednesday and said if they have it done Friday I'll pay them extra. They phoned today, it's ready. $25.00 for new keys. I said I'll be in after work and I'll give ya $30  |

OH,NO! Haven't you ever watched Antiques Roadshow? When you cleaned off the grime, you just destroyed the collectibility value of the cabinet!
Seriously, though--don't refinish it. You might upgrade it from "not worth a second glance" to "worth checking out" from a thief's perspective.

No change will be done to the look of this piece.
Tape residue on the door and a stain of dust and cigarette smoke mix were removed.
