I think it looks uncirculated but some very faint hairlines on the obverse leaves the impression that it may have been wiped. Beautiful coin regardless.

As mentioned, if those hairlines are on the coin, that's a concern for the grade, but it looks MS64 or 65 if they aren't a factor (on the coin)... and depending on the intact lustre too.

That 5 cent piece is near perfect and with a ton of detail in the hair braids around her ear.
Yes there are a few very fine hairlines on it but at the same time there are no contact marks which you would normally expect.
Definitely MS64 or 65 IMHO. I just wish that it had some toning..as you would expect..

The more I look at it I'm sure it wont go MS.. There is a scratch above the CEN in Cents and also some black raised black spots which is consistent with corrosion or foreign matter... Add the hairlines on both Obv & rev and not surprised if it comes back as whizzed.... If so a very well done job.. To bad it had not retoned she would be a great coin

As I said before, I don't think you stand a chance of getting that coin in a PCGS holder. Currently they are on a 'witch hunt' for hairlined coins and they are grading all slightly hairlined coins as 'details'.
Possibly, ICCS will ignore these and then your coin will grade ms64 or ms65, but you may also get an au58 from ICCS.
Something very similar to what happened with glenzy1's coin that he posted a day or two ago.
I am surprised at the number of posters here that have neglected to take note of these hairlines.
If you're one of them and you're buying raw Unc coins, I would suggest you pay a little more attention to these hairlines as it'll wind up biting you in the pocketbook.

I still feel that this coin is great,...but I don't get the strange gray colour. Have other experts(here) seen such a colour before? Would a recent dip give this coin such a bland gray..?..

this type of grey is usually the work of whizzed coins..

artdio...You have said possibly "whizzed" to get this grey colour. Would you or anyone here be able to give us more info on this process. Is it chemically treated or is it blasted with something..? Please explain ... I still love the very fine details on this 1899...

devlec, whizzing is when they use for example a dremel or other type of mechanical tool with a metal - wire brush..It is done is a high speed circular motion.. This will if done right give the appearance of luster but almost always has this greyish look.... Now I am no expert on this but one can usually tell by the super fine hairlines .....Dont get me wrong this one is a very very nice coin and I might be wrong ..but I would be surprised.....Maybe some other folks with more knowledge about this could chime in

Just came back form a weekend trip and saw all the comments about this coin so I had to dig it out again and have a good look at it with a 6x loup which is use to grade coins. I could not see anything wrong with this coin with my 6x loup. Now don't forget you are seeing this coin the size of a dinner plate and that the shine is all there just could not bring it out with the camera. I can assure you that this coin was not whizzed or tampered with by me. I've had it in my collection for 25 years or more.
Thanks for all the comments

Thanks for getting back in here viper....
All of my 5 cent silvers have some variable toning in them and I can't remember ever seeing one that is soooo evenly gray toned.
The detail in the hair is wonderful and I don't see how you could keep such fine detail in the leaves and hair and have had any polishing introduced ( some have suggested whizzed ) on this coin.
I would think that it's definitely worth getting it graded by the pros..
