If I had the money for this one I'd be all over it.

I wouldn't be surprised if they used two sets of dies for this one to create the reliefs.
Rest in Peace

Actually, it was 2007 - jeez how time goes by, and it was a $1,000,000 (million) dollar coin. It had 100 kg of 99.999 gold. Rumour has it, a Saudi prince has it now, and he uses it as a coffee table.

Saw that big gold 'coin' at the 2008 CNA Convention in Ottawa. Pretty cool.

Edit to add. Apparently, there are 5 of them out there somewhere.

"After several interested buyers came forward, the Mint decided to make a very limited quantity available for sale. To date, five of these majestic gold bullion coins, weighing 3,215 troy ounces each, have been purchased by investors from Canada and abroad."

"The world's largest gold coin is on display at the Canadian Mint Pavilion in Vancouver, site of the 2010 Winter Olympics. Face value of $1 Million dolars but is worth about $4 Million dollars right now, depending on the price of gold."

Guessing that is where the $4M figure came from.

I wonder what the demand would be it had it been a $10000 for $10000 offering?

5000/31.1034768 ~= 160.75 troy ounces

160.75 toz * US$22.77/toz * 1.029 CAD$/US$ ~= $3766

Yes, it's a coin... But yes, I'm buying it as a piece of art.
Once-in-a-lifetime investment, not intended for resale, but for permanently enjoying its view.

At an issue price of over US$8,000, that's a heck of a markup (more than 100% PLUS US$500).

I dont think anyone buying one of these is concerned about how much over spot it is lol.

Some rich people spend more then that on a night out.

Saw a 1kg coin at a recent coin show and was not overly impressed. Definitely a good conversation starter though!

Let us compare markups.
Right now, on the site of one of the most important coin sellers in the world, we have:
1 oz 2016 silver Lunar: 74,99 (Proof) and 42,02 (BU)
1 oz 2015 silver Lunar: 79,99 (Proof) and 35,03 (BU)
and -onn average- we end up again with a 100% premium.

The production process of these 5kg cois is as follows (I'm copying from the mint site):

  • This exquisite work of art that is a unique marriage of ancestral carving and modern minting techniques. Each coin is fashioned from a single pour of pure molten silver that weighs an astounding 5 kg. It took approximately four weeks to produce the dies from a three-dimensional digital rendering of Hart's original sculpture. This was followed by 100 hours of milling, and another two weeks of polishing and texturizing to prepare the die for a succession of eight strikes in order to achieve the coin's exceptionally detailed relief and engraving—a remarkable feat in minting!

  • Expertly crafted with multiple finishes that bring exceptional detail, dimension and shine to this unique design.

  • By renowned Haida master carver and Eagle Clan Chief James Hart (7idansuu), this astonishing sculpture is truly one-of-a-kind, both in the context of Haida art and in the broader context of art production—making it an especially apt subject for a unique large-format coin.

  • Hand polished to perfection, made-to-order with a very limited mintage of 100 worldwide.

  • Your coin is encased in an acrylic box and—along with a serialized certificate in a book format—presented in an elegant collector's box made of Canadian walnut wood and branded the Royal Canadian Mint. For secure shipping, the collector's box is placed inside a watertight, crushproof, and dustproof Pelican Case 1550.

But, apart from all those comparisons with other coins, let us make another comparison, with other kinds of art pieces.
A screrenprint by Andy Warhol (about the same number of pieces made), for instance:
- cost of the paper: 1 USD
- cost of the printing: 4 USD
- price 50.000 USD: 10.000 times the cost of the raw materials and the production process.
Can you name one person that evaluates her Warhol at the price of the production process?

EDIT: That observation brings on another important question. What will be the price of all those NCLT in the very long term? My Two Cents: most of them will be evalued at the production process cost (i.e. more or less at the value of the metal the coin is made of; i.e. as a painting of a very unnoticeable painter); only a few of them will have a premium attached on them (i.e. as art pieces of very important painters like Picasso or Michelangelo).
Indeed, even today coins and medals of important painters and sculptors have not huge premiums (what can be the price of this http://www.palazzo-medici.it/mediat...ura_de_Pazzi medal? Here https://www.deamoneta.com/auctions/...sance+Medals you can find prices for Reinassance medals, and you can see that their value is not so huge), but I'm not buying the coin to make money, but to enjoy daily its beauty.

A 100% markup on a single ounce of silver is only around US$19.00 (at current spot).

These cost you silver price US$3,055 PLUS US$4,955 to get just one.

A rich man's coin. Would a wise rich man buy one of these for investment, or some high grade rare Canadian coins for the US$8,000+ ?

If you are ready to pay a 100% premium for Proof vs BU one ounce coin, you still end up with a 100% premium after having bought 150 proof silver ounces.

The real question -from an investment point of view- is about the second topic: the market. Currently there is a strong market (in the USA) for some high-graded coins. This is not the case for coins of other countries.
I can name at least one collectible whose prices fell a lot (i.e. stamps).
Assumed that both a collector of hig-graded USA coins, an me (collector of NCLT), enjoy rěthe same pleasure in owning their coins, in 500 years time who will have done the better deal for their grand-grand-...-grand-children?
First: I am quite sure they will both end on the losing side with respect to other -productive- investments.
Second: while I don't see a further boom on premium prices on high-graded coins (like stamps, maybe the substitution of physical coins with electronic money will give a strong negative blow to the coin market), I can hope (and I know that the chance is slim) that there will be some market for NCLT of "famous" sculptors and/or engravers. [For instance, it was definitely out of my budget, but the 1 kg gold coin of The Royal Mint celebrating the 2012 Olympic games in London is by Anthony Caro. The coin has a horrible aspect, but it's by one of the greatest British artists.]

People who buy these 5 kg coins don't care about resale vale, markup, or bullion value. They are rich people that consider $12,000 coffee money. To them it is a piece of artwork. Not investment.
