Hmm...okay. I'll put it on one of our scales at work tomorrow and see what it comes out at.

I know that the pics aren't good,..but am I also seeing many facets 'on and around' the rim..?

Would the facets now be a giveaway for a cent blank and not a dime blank..?

- What I dont understand is how can a penny strike fit on a dime blank? The diameter is different as well as the thickness so how does that work. Wouldnt the thickness be a dead give away? Is it possible that its a plated penny? Could someone explain that please...

So would it have been plated by a 3rd party (chemistry class?) and returned to circulation or done before being released from the mint? I'll post the mass tomorrow.

Thanks john100, I too realize weight is very important. Its just that the picture seems to show a full penny rim, all the ones I just looked up show a very thin if any rim. Pehaps another pic with it laying beside a dime might tell us more till we get the weight.

Firstly, If it was a dime planchet it would stick to a magnet.

jkondor :Pennies are commonly plated for jewelry, if you google that under images or otherwise there are tons of them.

Sorry I should have said "could " not would. Somewhere buried deep in these forums I read about how plating could change the magnetism. I also read not too long ago that if it feels slippery or like Teflon it may be mercury plated, if so avoid touching it mercury is toxic.

Weight is 2.503g. I'm going to get some photos on the microscope in a bit. I'm leaning towards plated based on what I saw.

A dime would weight 2.07g and a normal cent 2.5g. Since your coin is 2.503 I think it's a plated cent.

Looks nickel plated to me.... here is a way to plate them with zinc (silver) and brass (gold).
