I will go with EF-45. I was split between 45 and 50 but eventually decided that there was just a tad too much wear on the tops of the eagle's wings. A great coin!

The detail is AU but I wonder if it's holdered as cleaned. Even those these often get breaks in the grading room, the volume and location of the hairlines is borderline for problem-free.

I think this coin would have a strong chance of getting into an AU holder, but I'm not into the crackout game.

EF-45 is solid, I doubt this would upgrade on a break out.

EF 45 seems right, I think it would have a hard time making AU-50. As BH mentioned, I would also be worried about it coming back in a details holder.

Perhaps AU might be optimistic, but why the heck would this coin ever come back in a details holder?

The coin has been cleaned and was deemed market-acceptable by NGC. Look around the lettering/date/devices at the numerous hairlines and compare that to the area inside the lettering and date.

Classic head and earlier gold pieces are often given a pass on cleanings and sometimes even improper cleanings are holdered problem-free and given a CAC sticker as worthy. The market has said that's okay.

P.S. The images may accentuate the hairlines.

I'd have to say that having the coin in hand, you don't see anything that strikes you as improperly cleaned. There are no series of parallel wipe lines and yes the photos greatly exaggerate all the surface imperfections.

I am not trying to slam your coin in any way. It's a nice market acceptable piece in a series that is tough to find with original surfaces. Here's a PCGS AU50 with mostly original surfaces. I'd guess 90% of surviving pieces in this series have been cleaned and many of those are in problem-free holders.
