Check for the 1935-P double die reverse and the 1936-D 3 1/2 leg varieties. Ya never know until you look.

I'd have bought that set for 20 dollars.

I just now noticed that only Denver produced the Buffalo nickel in 1938. Ya learn something every day. I do ... despite my hard-headed nature.

I'll have to go back and look through the rest of his albums, he really only cares about silver/gold and there is two stacks of whitmans and other assorted coin albums about 3 feet high there that nobody has ever really gone through since he bought 'em... Said that he paid about 2x face for most of it so he'll let it go cheap if I'm interested since nobody else will buy it off him and he doesn't wanna go through it. He said he only pulls keys, so there could be some real nice stuff in there...

Chancellor, for the longest time, when I used 2x2's, I was trying to figure out why I hadn't found a '38 plain buff lol.

Thanks for the heads up Western, neither coin had those varieties, but man, that '35 DDR is cool!

Good deal for 20 bucks. If it were me, though, the dateless or near dateless Buffs would have to go. I'm working on a set too, with the goal being all coins with full dates.

Eh, this is a secondary set, Darth. My primary has mostly full-date coins with a few exceptions that are being worked on.

Great buy - now what are you waiting for, go grab the rest of the sets he doesn't want! Never know what hidden inside them as far as cherry picks! Worth the gamble I'd say.

I don't know w hole lot about Buffalo nickels, but the strike quality of the 1913 type 1s is all over the map. I spent what seemed like a really long time finding a nice AU/BU example that fit my budget, and I finally did find one with excellent luster, but the fields are really lumpy for lack of a better word.

You guys know I'm a frugal soul .. by nature and by necessity, so the coin I ended up taking a chance on had some green crap on it that immediately and completely melted away in a bath of acetone. From buying the old "shoebox cache" I was able to recognize the green sludge that was on it as being the type that's easily removed without a trace or any surface damage.

The reverse picture is a bit better ... the obverse picture is a bit washed out. The pictures don't really do it much justice.

That's a nice '13 T1. The lumpy fields are part of the design, I prefer it to the T2's. My '13 in my main set is a VF, I like most of my coins to look similar in their sets and there is no way I could afford an XF-AU set of buffs. The general plan is F-VF on the earlier dates, and MS from '34 and on. Given my general refusal to spend more than a couple bucks on any Buffalo nickel, it will be quite a while before I fill the set. Here's my most valuable coin thus far, purchased in a lot of with about 50 other buffs for $20. This lot upgraded/filled almost 15 holes in my set. Ridiculous quality for the price.

My Dansco 7070 in XF-AU/BU is to the point where the remaining coins necessary to complete it ... are mostly 4 figure coins. Gold coins notwithstanding, I need just a handful of issues ... but it will tax my creativity to make those acquisitions. There are a few coins (and only a few) in my type set that don't quite reach XF .... so I'm always looking for replacements for a few. My set may never be complete.

I am trying to complete a set of small cents ... of which I need 11, 8 indians and 3 wheats. My set of Mercury dimes which lacks the overdates and the 16-D, and my type set. That's enough to keep me busy....and broke. I scoop up every bargain I can find, and periodically have a sale to turn the acquisitions into large enough chunks of change to do some good. It's getting to where it's going to take larger chunks now....or a LOT of luck.
