@SeatedSeeker - Thanks. :-)

Yeah I'm not seeing any major red flags other than some nasty wear.

If it's silver, enjoy it. :-)

Not even much wear - AU50 maybe? I don't see any reason to consider it counterfeit. The ear is a bit of a red flag, but I think it's a strike artifact. This is a New Orleans coin, needing evaluation with slightly different rules than other Morgans. Perhaps the seller was unaware of that.

Either way, you got it for less than half of melt.

Weight correct, diameter correct, silver, and Reeding looks right. If it's a fake, it's the best one I've ever seen. I'd buy em at $6.00 all day long.

Btw and a on the photos.

Until you go to VAM it and find out it is a fake. Every Morgan and Peace dollar has a VAM #. Find out which VAM # it is and show the markers and then I will believe it is real. If the seller is calling them fake then I would be very careful.

There are not that many listed for 1890-O so it should not be too hard to identify if it is real. http://www.vamworld.com/1890-O+VAMs

The O does not look high from the photos. So it would be regular position but could be doubled.
http://www.vamworld.com/1890-O+Reverses

It looks like a normal date position.

I have it tentatively as VAM-15. MM is definitely (to me) right-shifted. Could be wrong.

Another thing to worry about is they could be stolen. Nobody that sells Silver does it that low. Any coin shop would pay $20 or more for the coin.

It looks ok...hard to tell from pics tho. Did you ask the seller what exactly is their reason for thinking its counterfeit? Easy ones to watch out for are micro O Morgans...1896, 1900, and 1902 micro O Morgans are contemporary counterfeits. Even so...people still collect them and they can carry a premium. They all share the same reverse die. There are legitimate micro o varieties...like the 1899-O.
At the very least...if its silver...like many have said you did ok. Check the diagnostics tho. On the other hand...if it is why did the seller let it go for $6? That's not enough $ to sell it...for me at least. But it is worth the chance to find out if its fake. I would have picked it up too!

When I see the pic of the reeding I have to wonder....
Here is a post with pics comparing reeding and overlating the design of a very good 1879 fake I bought directly from the Chinese manufacturers. They said they would make them in silver for me also.

Mine is a bit thicker than the original to make the weight correct.

I don't like the look of the obverse rim. Haven't seen any genuine coins that look like that. I vote fake on it.
Here's one I know is genuine.

I believe what is on the obverse rim is called rim finning. I am not saying the coin is real though. The only way to tell is to VAM it or show it to an experienced coin dealer. Have you done the tissue paper test to see if it is actually silver? I have never tried it, but have seen a few tests shown on this coin forum. http://www.coincommunity.com/collec...sue-test.asp

If it's a fake, it's one of the best I've ever seen. It even has silver-specific toning, of the exact nature you'd see a coin manifest when recovering from an older cleaning.

I agree SuperDdave, it is one of the best fakes ever made if it is not real. The one that Earle42 posted
https://goccf.com/t/119357
is a pretty decent fake, I mean if I knew nothing about VAM's I would believe it was real with photos. It even has a die chip in the 8 of the date that I have seen on many VAM's. That being said the one in the OP thread does not have anything other than the reeding that I can say looks unusual.
