I grew up in Millcreek township in Erie. Now I am homesick... I miss the lake effect winters that last into April.

I don't see why they just didn't take the change to a bank and run it through their coin counter rather than pay 4 people to count it all out.

My bank doesn't have a coin counter for its customers. And I am not putting my coins in a Coinstar. They now charge 10.9 cents/dollar. No thanks, I will spend them as is or roll them myself.

This so much! My Credit union locally (I use an out of state bank for 99% of my banking) had a machine in the lobby, one of the reasons I signed up with them, that made change easy to deal with, and when I had the odd local check, I could deposit it there without chancing on the mail losing it if I mailed it off. They have removed the change counter and gone to a fee based system for all change totaling more than $10.00 or two rolls. Not a happy customer. I have thought of using the Coinstar to get the fee waived gift cards on stuff I will use like Starbucks, etc. at least then I still get my full value (if you can count overpaying for coffee a full value)!

Sure, just take the money and tell her that he will get a receipt and the money credited to her bill in a week or so after the bank counts it, confirms the amount, and credits the towns account. Of course the bill will not be marked as being paid until then so if it becomes past due before the town is credited with the money late fees will be assessed. When we moved back home I paid our last rent payment in $1 bills and halves (tried with those, read on). The place was being more and more rude toward the end of our contract. We actually had mushrooms growing from one of our walls. An INTERIOR wall with no water pipes. Here a pipe was leaking above our apartment and soaked the wall. It took over a week for them to even start fixing it.
So they received their $600 payment with:
200 $1 bills 800 half dollars (boy did that sack make a BANG)
They wouldn't accept the half dollars (no big deal) so I went and got them $400 in money orders...$5 at a time (free from my bank, I told the lady what I was doing and she used to live in the same apartments).
Demanded a receipt for EVERY SINGLE money order.......and my $1 deposit back.

why would 800 halve smake a big bang? that is only 4/5ths of a box. when I dropped my last box it burst open not with a bang, but a whimper. not a single string and son wrapper burst. one did split a little, but that was fine. i think people just dont understand that money is money. they all want plastic. if ANYONE ever tells me they can't take a few rolls of coins to pay for something, they will end up me in line with a box of pennies for my net purchase, and I will make them count it all out! Walmart once tried to tell me they couldnt take a roll of quarters for a loaf or bread a jar of peanut butter and some jelly. I told her then someone could reshelf it. oddly the very7 next week the started getting those self serve machines that I feed up to 160 coins into for various things. 160 quarters is plenty for groceries with $40, but 160 pennies will just get a loaf of bread. still can't get the article to load, but a city getting upset about being paid? pay me in any form of cash. I know how to count and search it for errors and varieties. that is probably what took them so long to do, sort out any silver and stuff they wanted to keep from it.

Who said they were wrapped? ;) Loose my friend, dropped from about 6' to their low desk. That's nearly 20lbs.

unrlled, my luck would be have them drop one at a time and roll everywhere under foot. or since I keep lose ones in one of those chip can things it would probably punch a hole through the floor like an iron spike!

That right there is funny. It could have only been better if she had paid using pennies.

I would happily accept the old gold coins that are no longer technically legal tender. Or, let someone pay me in Half Cents. I would not complain.

I don't blame her! They're charging high prices here in Pennsylvania, Luzerne Country.

Ultimately the only thing that gives currency value is your ability to pay taxes with it/inability to pay taxes with anything else. Anyone refusing to accept any legal tender to pay taxes is actually breaking the law. I bet if she threatened to call up the US treasury to tell them that their coins are no good to pay taxes in that town, there would be a different reaction.
