I'm out of my league on this, but I'll guess AU-50.

I was thinking XF-45 for your coin, possibly AU-50.

Come on, even the letters in Liberty are worn; if PCGS gave this an AU they are really bonkers. EF40 at best. Then again I am a very conservative grader. I follow the expectations from back in the early 70's. Grading has gotten much more lax since then.

AU53 maybe got details for a cleaning? No way this coin is an EF grade, way too much detail in the hair.

I will go with a problem free AU-50 but do wonder if they may have detailed it for the scratch in the field above the eagle.
Rest in Peace

Thanks for all of your opinions!! The PCGS grade is............................................XF-45
1834-Classic-Head-Half-Eagle.-You-Vs.-PCGS
I agree with those who guessed AU-50 on it. . I do think the obverse of this coin is a SOLID AU territory, it has the luster and the detail that at least equals or surpasses most of the AU50s out there....and competes with many of the 1834 53s and 55s if you view the heritage auction archives and compare.
The reverse, however, looks more high XF-ish to me, and the light old scratch may play a role in bringing the coin down to a 45. The obverse is a lot more important to me, as 90% of the time viewing any coin in my collection is spent viewing the obverse.

And THIS is why I do not grade gold! It is a beautiful coin, I like this one better than the 1836. Congratulations on the acquisition .
