Very interesting and dramatic. I find it hard to believe there is nothing close to this in Snow's attribution guide. It would be interesting to know what he would say about this coin. I agree it is difficult to come up with a value when you have nothing to compare to.

That is interesting. I reckon it's one of those it's worth what someone is willing to pay. It's definitely a nice coin.

Looks like he had the same photographer as the post in the ebay Worst Coins thread.

That's because it's a striking error--so it's unique. This isn't on the die, otherwise it would be well-known.

I saw this one too. What is interesting is how there is no double strike that I could see on the reverse. Dont really know how that can happen.

That makes sense and I am embarrassed that I missed that.

Not sure what it will go for but I bet Mr. Snow would bid on it!

The bit is at $260.00 ... with at least 3 bidders ...

My guess is this coin will top $300

Errors are a fast moving area of collecting.

========================

In the wild you can pocket moderns with relative ease ... and mostly at (or near) face.

2 weeks ago one of my LCDs let me pick through (about) 400 Ikes. I was looking for errors. Paid a premium of 10 cents for the privilege.

He offered a boat load of BU Ikdes. And had a puzzeled look as I only purchased some greasers.

===============================

Just got a fresh $1,000 bag of Ikes today. Half way through digging. So far so good. Will share results in a new thread.

So with a striking error does the coin bounce a bit and then gets struck again leaving the doubling ?

this would draw more attention if it was slabbed.

Yeah...how this happened exactly is a mystery to me.
Perhaps the coin was stuck to the reverse die, and the hammer (obverse) die was a little loose.

Well the coin was struck at least three times but it is not oversized. That means it was triple struck IN the collar. I would say the rev was the anvil die and the obv (hammer die) was loose and shifted slightly between strikes. The first strike was shifted toward 6:00, the second it shifted up toward 12:00 and for the final strike it had shifted about halfway back toward 6:00.
