I would go VF 35 maybe XF40 details on this one. Too bad about the scratches. Amazing.

On this trip into this site I only carried my shovel and pinpointer. Knowing that coins have been found on the bottom level I simply dig a hole roughly 3 feet in diameter to a depth of 4 feet. at that point I am able to expand the base of the hole out at least a foot in all directions. I simply detect as I am going. Clearly, no detector sniffs out coins at 4' but once down to 3.5 the detector is useful. I saw this coin drop from the side of my "cave" and had to use my shovel to gather up the dirt I thought it was now hiding in. Once to the surface, detected using the pinpointer to locate. My instincts from the way it fell way down there was that I had an old coin and not a colonial style flat button, of which I've found hundreds in this same foundation/cellar. I was pleasantly surprisedto pull lady liberty from that hole even though she is exactly what I was looking for. To answer your question, I use both the Whites MXT and the Minelab 5000 to surface hunt.

that is incredible. I am so pleased it was found rather than spend a potential eternity in the ground. Nice find sir.

WOW - scratched but no matter due to the price you paid!

I'd go minimum of VF+ details - super amount of detail, I'm guessing not too bad of corrosion due to being under a house and away from the century plus of rain and snowfall, rather in a fairly dry environment kept this coin in great shape.
