I don't see anything keeping this one from AU55. Nicely done, probably a $1k coin in a PCGS slab.

AU-53. Not sure about the surfaces but the TPGs seem to let a lot of minor problems slide when grading Seated dollars. |

I believe I saw this coin in-hand shortly before the OP bought it on Friday. For the price the dealer was asking, I passed, as I thought it was mid-range AU with an old cleaning and wasn't sure it would slab problem-free. It lacks cartwheel luster, which was the big thing that pushed me off. I don't have much experience with seated material so I was hesitant to pull the trigger on such an expensive piece.
Looking at the pics on my phone, I'm 100% positive this is the same coin.

I think the quick pictures I took on the delaers felt actually show the coins true in-hand look better than the OP's... no offense intended.   Edited by chasingtailbar

From some of the research I have done lately(which is not extensive), it seems that many AU Seated dollars in TPG slabs do not really have cartwheel luster, especially on the obverse. Luster is very important to me too, but I think this is one of those coins you have to fork out big bucks for substantial cartwheel luster. Also, many in slabs have been lightly cleaned, TPGs are very forgiving on this type. Even from your pics, chasingtailbar, I am still sticking to my AU55 problem free estimate, or at least a 53. Also, I am sure this is what it looked like in hand to you chasingtailbar, but toners like this vary a lot depending on the lighting, so I would not dismiss the OPs representation as to what it looks like in hand based on the type of lighting he was in. |

Thanks everyone for the comments. And the favorable grade opinions. I'll stand by my photos compared to those phone snaps as to what the coin *actually* looks like up close. Never would have pulled the trigger on what was pretty much an impulse purchase, if all I'd had to go on were those flat colorless shots. I'm not experienced enough to be able to determine facts or fancy regarding 'old cleaning' but I do have a good eye for subtle shades of toning. Coin is not likely to see the inside of a plastic slab as long as I own it. I think you folks are probably as accurate as any TPG. And since SsDd has rated it the highest of the lot of ya, it might be time to host a toast to the one(s) who let it get away ;-) All in good fun, of course. No hard feelings anywhere please. It is a small world. And there is *always* another coin to buy. -msy |

I've bought plenty of Morgans from him over the years and have done quite well, kept most of them too. He's a good guy and always cuts me good deals.
Deleted my last post because I figure its poor form to out what somebody may have paid for something publicly.
