Quote: Here are two coins that I own, just for comparison. That actually muddies the waters a bit. The first one, with all the denticles and most of "LIBERTY" worn away and its virtually eradicated reverse, could easily have gone PO01. I suppose with the second one the key was the partially obliterated rim lettering on the reverse, but it probably still should have received a composite grade of G04 based upon what's otherwise intact.

Quote: Here's the PO-01 used for PCGS photograde. Maybe I'm misapprehending something here, but that doesn't appear to be identifiable by date or mintmark, so is it even certifiable if submitted? Is it a requirement for P01 that a coin be so far gone that it can only be recognized as a specific type within a denomination?

For a coin to be graded by PCGS as PO-01, it has to be identifiable by date and type (I assume mintmark as well) "PO-1 Identifiable date and type" http://www.pcgs.com/grades.htmlThe PO-01 posted above, is graded by PCGS.

Just a little background on this coin - I picked it up yesterday from a pawn shop I occasionally visit that does a lot of its business in coins and bullion. For whatever reason, recently they've been getting in a lot of heavily worn Morgans, and putting them out all together. I'd say none are better than G4, and several have additional issues such as badly dinged rims, recent scratches, odd mechanical surface damage, et cetera. Although low condition Morgans aren't normally on my radar, I rather liked this one for its consistent and apparently honest wear (albeit it does appear that at this advanced state, the reverses tend to look bit worse than the obverses). I have to also admit that in a perverse way, I thought it had a certain aesthetic quality.

Not being an expert on Lowball Morgans, I would say AG-3 for the original OP's coin.
