Very interesting find. After reading it thoroughly, I'd say the government may have missed the point, but only because it wasn't covered by the question to which the opinion responds. A more comprehensive, consumer-friendly answer would be to require customers to either opt-in or opt-out of LCC's coin approval service before receiving coins, so that customers would not have to be burdened by unwanted unsolicited approval sales.

Although the letter mentions the fact that Littleton doesn't report customers who don't return or pay for coins to a credit reporting service it does not say whether Littleton continues to fulfill further orders for customers who happen to view their unsolicited approval coins as gifts.

I had the misfortune of getting caught up with this stuff when I was 14 years old and ordered a $1 ancient Ceylon coin from them. I never opted into their "approval program", they just kept sending this stuff. At that time I had to send the coins back AT MY EXPENSE. It took a cease and desist letter to get them to stop. At least by then I had been collecting for a number of years, otherwise I might have been burned on this hobby.
Rest in Peace

No, Bobby, it sez that LCC has made sufficient changes in their business practices to close an alleged investigation.

No wrong doing admitted.

I bought from LCC a long time ago(20+ years) and they never sent me any additional coins to veiw. I need to take a short drive up the road and take a tour of their place.

I, too, when I first started collecting, bought coins from Littleton with knowledge of the "coins on approval" agreement; however, after awhile, they were sending me stuff I had no interest in, so I called their business, and requested removal from the "on approval" list. The following month I received another package from them, opened it, sent the most of it back (at my expense). Next month - another package!
Discussed this with my postman, and he told me, if I receive something I didn't order, nor want, to write REFUSED on the outside of the envelope or package, and return it without opening it (doesn't cost you anything for return postage that way). Did that for another two months, and the packages finally stopped coming.

"Second, LCC provides a postage-paid reply envelope along with coins sent on approval for consumers to return unwanted coins."

Littleton LIED to the FTC. I got some approval coins from them last year after I got some ASE's they were pushing for 5 bux each, and the return envelope WAS NOT postage paid.

I had to call them and tell them I was not paying to send them back, only then did they say they would send out a prepaid envelope.

THEY LIED!

I assume if anyone feels they believe that this company is still not following the rules set forth by the FTC in the letter and occured after the march 2007 letter could contact Mr. James A. Kohm and complain. His phone number is below.

It is still amazing that with all the coin web sites knocking Littleton as just no good, how come so many people still deal with them. I would think just word of mouth by now would have wiped them out.

Carl,
Good point, but that goes right along with the Coin Vault and other TV Coin Rip Off Shows. I have NEVER seen good words about them and their over priced - over touted coins.

We purchased from Littleton off and on for the past couple of years, until recently. No they don't pay for return shipping and yes, some of the coins are way over-priced but, I enjoyed getting the packages and seeing what they sent anyway. We did keep quite a few items though to fill our holes, etc. Shopping Littleton was not an unpleasant experience and we did have to carefully watch prices. The quality wasn't bad though (atleast on what we kept). We probably won't participate again but, I'm glad that we did so that I can comment on my personal Littleton shopping experience.

Littleton, Coin vault and those other TV Shopping scams reach hundreds of thousands of households every single week through TV and Newspaper advertisements. Most of the people that buy this stuff are not coin collectors. Most are ederly, shut ins and good natured. well meaning parents looking for stuff for the kids. They are not very informed. Just think back ...oh ...25 years ago at the information that you had at your finger tips back then. These folks are still living in the 1970's and believe what they read in the paper and see on TV. I'm sure that they also buy from the Franklin Mint and all of those "societys" that send out those glossy colorful brochures in the mail. Buy a $1.00 Presidential coin in a plastic sleeve with lots of "historical" information" culled from the encyclopedia. They call it "educational and a learning tool for the grandkids" a "family heirloom" all for $29.95 per President. I bet they sell millions.

The ONLY place I've seen anti-tv hucksters and anti-Littleton speek has been online.

PS ..don't forget al of those Marshall Islands coins and stamp kits ..LOL.

And don't forget the WTC ripoff scams. I really hate the ones that come on TV and say they will donate 25 cents for every coin sold. Sure they will, heck, they are making $25 per coin on these scams....

and the line "layered in pure 24k gold"

Ok. We all know that means there is 1 cent worth of gold thinly spread over junk metal...

Like the old saying:

"There is a sucker born every minute"

Still true today as it ever was.

I just wanted to correct my previous statement. Littleton DOES send a Postage Paid return LABEL. The return envelope does not have the label on it but, the receipt does.

I thought that my husband had canceled but, lo and behold we received a complete set of Presidential dollars (P's and D's) Washington and Adams for $10.00 for all. This was a "special offer" and we will probably cancel our subscription after this. He had ordered the "special offer" for me since I haven't had time to shop around or even look lately.

Now, I AM "informed" and I've been collecting since I was about 7..let's see 46 years or so. I know that I could get them at a better price than $10 for 4 coins but, $2.50/coin...(Atleast most of you think so) I can live with that. A little postage - yes but, no fuel spent getting across town and no traffic.

I don't do home TV shopping of any kind though. There's just some things that a girl won't do!
