I agree with the others about separating the key dates and coins that look uncirculated or mint. They will command higher prices with collectors than just scrap bullion prices.

Most dealers, pawnshops, jewlers, etc will offer you a pm melt value for them because they will have to send them to an independant TPG company which will cost them to get a comparable value if some are in good condition I would recomend you getting them certified or you might want to just carry on your dads collection for memories throughout the years if there are some key dates & mint marks they will only keep going up in value over the years imho ! http://www.numismedia.com/fmv/price...icesgd.shtml Good luck with them.

BadToTheBone & HOLLYWOOD - Key date search in progress, but it looks like there won't be any. Guess the coin dealer went through the pieces pretty well - as would be expected - before selling the pieces as bullion. But still looking - lots of pretty, shiny ones in great condition. 52Raymo & smokeriderdon - Okay, here you go.

52Raymo - Okay, I give up. Why would you want to see a pic of a worn, no date, barely see the details quarter? There has to be some logical reason if 2 of you want to see it. The only thing I can think of is for study - but, what? (Sorry, but I see stars)

chris, the reason is there are diagnostics that will tell you if you got REALLY lucky and that is a 1916. The 1916 being one of the Holy Grails of coins. Here are pics showing those diagnostics... Clearly, given the strong rivets in the shield, the loop at the bottom of the drapes and the recess in the right hand wall, this is not a 1916.

smokeriderdon - I should have figured. Thank you for taking the time to point out the many differences, both on the '16 and the '17 SHAFTA9a - Thank you for the welcome and the nudge to keep posting. I must admit that I can't think of a better place. This is a great place for information and help. 52Raymo - Glad the photos came out so you could see something.

SHAFTA9a - Of course, I would have to start thanking everybody in separate posts to get enough to sell the coins here. Problem is, I don't know enough about coins to seriously contribute to a real discussion. Oh well, nice place to hang out, anyway

chris, read and ask questions as you think of them. You will soon rack up plenty of responses AND learn some good stuff in the process.

Hi smokeriderdon, Ah, and there we have the sum of the situation. I have an interest in coin collecting as needed for the sake of properly handling the estate. And, without a serious interest it is really hard to ask intelligent questions and, even harder, to respond intelligently to quality answers. I'm sorry to admit that coins hold no personal interest and I probably never would have even been here 4 years or so ago had it not been that I was at a loss as where to look or how to start. This forum has been invaluable for reference and advice - the folks here are great, they have patience and are real people. I realize that the common thought is that 'the only stupid question is the one that goes unasked'. But, just asking questions, merely for 'Trivial Pursuit', to rack up points to try and sell a few coins, I consider an insult to those who take the time and trouble to help, share their knowledge and answer them. Sorry, didn't mean to go off the 'deep (thought) end' Who knows, though. Perhaps my brother will find something else stashed in the house - or chamber or garage or ... - and I will ask for help once again. In the meantime, thanks to one and all for all the help over the years!
