Yikes!! Thanks for the info!

I'll take closeups of the date and mint mark tomorrow morning. I'm also new to coin photography and find that natural light works best!

Some pretty big hits on the reverse. If gradeable perhaps VF-35.

I say it would grade VF-35, maybe even EF-40. If it is real, you have a great coin!

With the closeups, it looks like it has been cleaned at some point. Maybe a while back.

Here is the history of the three Morgan dollars. My dad received them as a gift at the time of his birth in 1929. I'd heard him mention the coins, but had never seen them until 2 days ago. They were not regularly taken out and bandied about, but were stored away somewhere for about 85 years.

We found the coins the other day in a tattered envelope on which my dad's mother had written "Baby Louis $3". She died in 1931, so the coins had been in the envelope since at least 1931. The envelope had been sealed at one time, but had been opened before we found it.

I think it's likely that my dad, or his dad, had taken the coins out of the envelope and looked at them once or twice over the years, but as I said they weren't passed around at parties.

As for cleaning, if either of them had cleaned the coin in the last 85 years, I think that they would have cleaned all three of the coins. One of the other coins, the 1921 dollar, has a bit of something gooey stuck on the wing of the eagle. So if they were cleaned, it would have been before the goo got onto the other coin. And I think if one of them had gone to the trouble of cleaning the coins, they would have been fussy about putting one of them away with something stuck on it.

So it's possible that the coin has been cleaned but it must have been a very long time ago!

Based on the close-ups of the date and mint mark I believe it's a VAM-1B. The date position is a match and there appears to be the die scratch in the denticle below the 9. http://www.vamworld.com/1895-S+VAM-1B A very nice coin to have, indeed. Congrats! and welcome to CCF.

WOW! Beautiful. Imagine you could find a Capital Plastic holder for the trio or have one made. Maybe with a couple pictures of your dad would make a SUPERB numismatic and historical item for family and friends to enjoy.

VF-35. Worth at least $1000. Love the family history of it.

After seeing the closeup shots, I concur with the others that high VF would be a reasonable expectation as to grade, although it still might make XF40. A terrific heirloom in any event.

I'll go with VF-35. I like the patina, so do NOT attempt to clean it!
Thanks for posting.

If it were mine, I would get it in a TPG holder.

Thanks! I won't clean any coins, as will be obvious from some of the photos!

Any advice as to which company for the holder?

Thanks
