Very hard coin to aquire in any condition.. absolutely correct....

I don't mind the hole in this one as one knows it was probably a piece of jewelery at some point... It had been cherished.

If it was in a more common date coin I probably would pass.. but if this was offered to me.. I would probably pick it up.. and upgrade when I had the opportunity and funds.

I like it, but pretty much only because of the date. I would not have a clue on pricing.

I would prefer it to a hole in my collection. I might go somewhere between $50 and $100 for it to fill that hole. Fortunately I already have a G4 so don't need to make that tough call!

47 hard to fix a price, but I once bought an 1884 Rare date dime that was bent fairly badly. The dealer wanted 25 per cent of good4 money. At the time around 50 bucks. Ball park if I was buying to resell an 1889 such as yours pay around $150US or so. Too bad the hole is not a bit smaller it could be fixed fairly well. Sure not many nice 1889 dimes around, IMHO probably one of the rarest circulation strike Canadian decimal coins of the entire series .

Can someone please fill me in on why that date is so rare. With 1921`s the story is they were melted, is that the story with 1889 dimes

Very sad key space filler.
Being this worn with fatal hole,
about $50 max. to my way of thinking, but still a heck of a premium over melt.

I have owned severely damaged rare coins before, but dissapointment finally forces me to sell them all.

Normic there are a couple of theories the most likely being that the mint report for the period in question is wrong and that most ten cent coins ISSUED in 1889 were dated 1888. Another theory is that an entire shipment of them was lost at sea (unproven).
The 1888 ten cents is acquired rather easily and I can state with certainty the 1889 is very tough to acquire in any kind of grade. That is why even the OP coin is collectible with a hole.

would you have bought it

In a blink of an eye, very hard to come by and would have filled that dang hole.

Thank you Pacificoin. If you were to go to a good enough coin store they might just have one but there's 2 good ones on ebay I would still not buy for there condition. Why would someone let it circulate for so long being as rare as it is and even put a hole in it... some people. Tough coin to find in deed.

this coin came from an overseas estate and I venture to say that the hole was made absolutely innocent at the time, for whatever reason.

No doubt it was innocent! Always seems that the rare coins get attacked the most!

Seems like it was holed to display the reverse and not the obverse - was this the common "fashion"? Did somebody know it was rare and wanted to show off the date?
