You have found the right support group.... as long as you don't mind to discover how deep this rabbit hole actually goes......

Hope you enjoy the hobby!

I always wonder what cashiers think when they hand me my change and I start picking through it.

"Can you you believe that guy? He stood there and counted the change. Like I was going to short him a few pennies or something."

Well, you know what they say, the first step is admitting you have a problem!

I've always been told that it is, in fact, correct to stand there and count the change before leaving (in case it's slightly wrong - accidents do happen).

I've started doing it even before I started looking for shiny coins in there, actually.

Is this normal?

What you are describing is just a very mild case, but don't worry it is no over.
Next comes coin roll hunting and/or metal detecting.
This will be followed by hour and hours of digging through junk boxes (sometimes you will directly move on to this stage).
What comes after everyone keeps quiet about. You have to experience that for yourself.

It would be a problem if you did not do any of those things.

My wife goes grocery shopping once a week to a bigger town than ours (30 miles away).
Part of the shopping list includes the following:
20 rolls of cents
25 rolls of nickels
I also include an extra $100 if the bank she stops at has any halves or Ike's.

At the end of the week I've usually finished searching them. Then I return them to our local bank and start the whole process over again.
No problem!

I'm just glad someone is as worried as I am :-) Now that you all reassured me I can go convince my fiancée!

When you have completed whatever set(s) you are aiming to complete, get into ancient coins.
That'll cure your excesses!

After much soul searching, I decided to get into an area of numismatics where it would be impossible to complete a set.

I have to admit: I still look through pocket change, but not as avidly.

I want nothing to do with Moderns, and I still check all of my change. Get used to it.

If you think it's bad now, just wait until you find something that's actually valuable in your change!

I'm glad I'm at the right place then.

To expand on my (our) problems a little, here is a another question.

It's that time of year when we start seeing the 2015 coins appearing in our pockets...soon I know soon.
Grab the loop, look for damage and if it's a clean coin, I'll pop it in a flip.

Here it is.....

How many clean coins do I put in flips?
1 of each?
10 of each?
a roll of each?
They look so good, they need framed, then need preserved, they need LOVE.

If I do nothing, will I be kicking myself in 20 years when my son starts collecting and wants to make a modern set?
then I go to buy them all when I could of gotten them for face value.

Is my thinking wrong or right or off?
If my dad had grabbed a few coins every year in AU condition, I would have a kick AZZ set :)
