NGC decided it was AU Details obverse improperly cleaned. Which is nonsense (other than the AU part). Considering the junk environmental damaged coins from the Stacks 57th Street Hoard in straight grade holders this coin in a details holder is a sick joke. The obverse and reverse on this coin are identical in color condition and wear.

Another good reason to keep your copper raw in my opinion.

Before seeing the grade, I was going to guess AU-53.

Celticsoul, I like slabs for copper coins in high grades (for future resale), but I agree with some instances keeping them raw (this coin will go back to being raw). I actually like slabs, but the inconsistency and obvious preferential treatment is really a detriment to the hobby.

Someone was having a bad day at NGC. AU53 I don't think it was cleaned. Color and surfaces look fine to me

It's my continuous assertion that all copper coins of this age have been cleaned at least once. If this coin was cleaned it was long ago and it's retoned wonderfully. Cleaned or not I would love to have a coin like this in my collection, regardless of what some grader says.
