If CCN would join CCF and bring some open messages to the members and we could talk to them maybe, that would help their subscriptions.
We find that we learn more on CCF from the knowledgeable members than to look at CCN.

Quote: I really have tried to slant this thread to go to a positive direction by asking for alternatives to the CCN It has been said many times here, it is my opinion that the Canadian collector has the most to learn and gain by being a member of the RCNA. The CN Journal always has fascinating articles to read, and good columns written by those who have the hobby's best interests in mind. Also, being a member allows you online access to almost all the CN Journals that were published to date, going back to Volume 1, 1950. Another alternative, is that CCF has a partnership of sorts, with CoinWeek.com. They have articles available for you to read, at your leisure, for free. Lastly, it is hard to recommended alternatives to a publication like Canadian Coin News... because we don't know your collecting interests. My collecting interests are errors and varieties, so being a member of CONECA and receiving the Errorscope journal are great..

SPP: you're totally right on the RCNA membership... I was asking for that for Christmas... alas I guess I wasn't "that" good this past year... but that's something I will look into for myself... My collecting interests change more frequently than the weather in Melbourne. But generally I like 50 cent pieces and maritime coinage... but in all honesty I just like what it gives me.. something to do now that I have kids.. I was more than a bit reckless before.. then kinda got into it with the birth of my kid.. went to the RCNA in Winnipeg.. loved some of the people I had a chance to chat with.. never have looked back. I only wish I lived in Ontario with all the shows and the concentration of collectors in a short drive from each other.. alas I'm not.. so I learn as much as I can on here.. and other sources... I understand CCN may not be meeting the needs of many of their readers.. but for me it's better than nothing.. and I suppose I just don't like seeing someone encouraged to start gossip. I'm not saying you probably don't have just cause to do so... just that out in the open on this forum probably isn't good for anyone. If anyone wishes to gossip.. man I'd love to hear it... just let me buy the beer and let's do it privately... mmmm beer!

I stayed on with CCN for almost 2 years after others dropped out. I sent suggestions and corrections to the editor to no avail, but I publically thanked authors for articles well written and researched. I agree with SPP in that becoming a n RCNA member is well worth the money and library material. Perhaps a new editor not so chummy with the RCM will make a difference. It's easy enough to pick up a free copy at a coin show 3-4 per year to keep up with Trends. Overseeing Trends is a thankless job and I greatly appreciate those Trends functionaries that keep it going. It may not be updated enough for some people, but they only closely change things in one denomination/monarch per issue or month. It takes a long time to go through them all. The intro and discussion at the beginning is always good reading and Trends is worth it for that alone. Trends should be only ONE source for you to find out what a full retail price would be. You will find NOTHING concerning Canandain Numismatics from a single source.

Aside from the journal, there are a few really good numismatic societies and clubs that have original articles in their monthly newsletters.

Maybe just maybe, things will improve with the new gent. There is one other thing to ponder folks, maybe the CCN is just reflecting the amount of interest in the Canadian Coin World?

I don't see anyone listed as editor in the masthead of the latest issue.

CCN is nothing more than glorified toilet paper. I don't see the value in it. The odd time I pick-up a complimentary copy from various coin shows just reinforces my view. Trends never change, it's littered with ads, content isn't captivating (or sometimes not even factual). The publisher's actions seem to indicate a priority focus on being a Lighthouse reseller, rather than reforming CCN. It's too bad. I'm with SPP, RCNA is the way to go.

Like Pacificoin, I just received the latest issue a couple of days ago. I had just arrived home from a hectic day at work and so I sat down with a glass of vino to spend some quiet time reading it. Best issue in a long time and I enjoyed it.

I really do not think it is fair comment to compare the RCNA journal with CCN. They are both very different in their approach. Although I am not a member of the RCNA, I have over the years read many of the journals and in my library I have many years that are complete ( thanks to me past association with some prominent CNA members). A much fairer comparison would be the ANA ( of which I am a member ) monthly NUMISMATIST to the RCNA journal. Both are much more scholastic in their content than CCN and offer in depth numismatic articles. The Canadian Coin News is a basic bi weekly read that is certainly more general and a lot lighter in content . For the very basic and average collector the CCN serves a purpose. I think we should all give the new team a chance, if the current issue is an indication, they could be on the right track. Another thought is instead of bashing any publication, I am sure they would welcome written articles and positive input. There are many of us on this forum who have in the past , or who currently write articles for different publications. I am sure that CCN would welcome some new content.

I started a subscription in December and am happy I did. Interesting articles pertaining to coins and the history of Canada. Trends don't change to much but that's not their fault and I'd rather have them every coupe of weeks than every couple of months. It would be nice to have more about Canadian errors but there's always room for improvement. I am look forward to receiving my next addition.

As I noted earlier, there is no editor listed for the most recent issue.
I found there was an awful lot written about the recent Legacy Sale II, but then that was a very major, almost extraordinary, event. It will be interesting to see how much of an effect this has in Trends, since the general lack of movement there seems to be a common source of complaint with CCN.
