with 91o as this being a legit VAM-2A. I can also make out the die crack from the rim to the letter S in Pluribus.

Ya I thought VAM 2 after I looked as well but thought the mm looked larger. I guess from wear flatening.

Nice fine condition coin. The rim ding might get it a NET grade.

I'm stuck between VG10 and F12 but I'm also a conservative grader. Appears legit.

F12. Nice example of this key date. Your grandfather had a good taste in coins.

thanks guys. I don't think he was much of a collector, just saved what he could. These coins have been stored in a small sewing case for many years.

F-12, I don't think the nic would cause a details grade on this one.

Well that is good news! Maybe I should send off to get graded?

Generally the rim bump shouldn't garner a details grade unless it's so big that it shows on both sides. I'm no fan of coin slabs but in this case I would definitely get this coin authenticated as it would greatly increase the value.

91o and Dave got the attribution right (of course ) which lends faith to the originality of the coin. Features like that crack are very darn difficult to counterfeit believably. You can expect a TPG to be fairly lenient with it, not because it's an 1889-CC but because it's circulated heavily. A dealbreaker rim bump on an XF45 is not so much on an F12. But yeah, cleaned, disfigured, bumped or not this one needs to be in a slab if ever offered.
