I prefer to buy Rolex watches from the trunk of a car in the WallyWorld parking lot.

Well, if you're a gamblin' man who likes to bet on the really long shots, then I say go for it!

Can't you use ebay buyer protection if it is fake?

Yes you can. You'll need to either send the item back, or provide a letter from an expert stating it's fake and sign an affidavit that it has been destroyed and discarded. Then you get your money back.

99.99% chance it's fake. The reverse picture looks similar to many fakes I've seen. Also, consider how the seller described the coin....pleading ignorance.

Color's very fishy and the relief seems too high; too sharp to be genuine. It might be a modified coin, but my money's on 100% fake from China.

I would be shocked if this is real.

I love it when someone posts photos on an auction that look like they are taken from a security camera. Can you spot the fake?

Steve, do you provide said services? If, say, the OP wanted to gamble on it, could he then send it to you to either validate it's authenticity or file an affidavit saying otherwise, or would a TPG be better for that type of service?

Based on this http://www.ebay.com/gds/Coin-Fake-D...93333/g.html and this
You-Tell-Me,-Fake-1909-S-VDB?
can we say conclusively fake? 9s too closed, last 9 blunt, S in wrong position, right?

@matttheriley - Aye I do, via The Black Cabinet, but it needs to be sent in for physical inspection. If it is fake I provide an appropriate letter and the counterfeit meets Justice (the name of my COPY stamp :-) ) so the buyer can sign the "destroyed and discarded" statement in good faith. A TPG would charge you handsomely for the honor to do so, and take a month to do it -- which is longer than the 5 days ebay will give you.

The "0' and the "9" are slightly different in shape and text than your normal 1909 S VDB.

I also kinda wonder why the shipping is $6.00. $6.00 to send a cent...?

Funny how he can get a pic of the reverse sort of close, but suddenly with the same equipment he can't get as close for the obverse? Aren't there some tell-tale color changes around the date that could indicate heating? And also, my favorite: why are they so obsessed with adding extraneous information about how they acquired it? That's no provenance. To me that's the classic tell of a con - "the story".

Very clever how he manages to shoot the reverse so out of focus, as the periods between the VDB letters are one of the key diagnostics to tell 1909 VDB with added mintmark from genuine 1909-S VDB. Stay far, far away.

Best Regards,

George
