I'm with the 63/64 crown for all the same reasons. I am leaning towards an MS-64.

my first impression was MS-63 (even though I usually try to stay away from these things with all my being) and have to say the strike is very strong for the Peace series, they are usually so weakly struck I just can't tell a MS coin from a XF coin. All that being said I think I will go with the consensus and say 63/64

Awe C'mon Bryan, don't be afraid.

They are very tough based on a photo. Their design lacks the unique high points that the Morgan or Walking Liberty half have. Some times the only way to distinguish MS from AU is to rotate the coin in the light to see where the luster breaks are. This is compounded by the notoriously weak strike on most (except the '21).

I read between the lines on this one ... a common date in an ANACs holder ... 99% of the time it's MS. Now Sleaklight is going to tell me it's a holdered AU.

lol, better yet, I am going to tell you it's in a shocking MS 60 DETAILS Holder! Though it never got cleaned when it was with me and there are no hairline scratches on it. You think they got it wrong? I'll post pics of the holder later on when I crawl to my laptop.

All of you saying that is a weak strike are WAY off base. That is a hammered strike...even for a 23. With the glare its hard to tell if there is full feather definition but it looks like its all there.

The coin looks like it is devoid of luster from the photos and I'm guessing thats why its in a problem slab.

If the coin had booming luster it would be a lock at 65, although the photos disguise the cheek area well.

I am shocked.

I have a 1923 with the same die break/crack across the neck. I have found examples with the same die break/crack in 1922 also. I have looked to see if there was a particular VAM for this coin and I found a few VAM's that had this feature but were recognized for another one. If you have any information on this one please share.

Thanks,

Jim

Sleak,

I would crack that sucker out of that slab. Not to resubmit because it is a common date and probably not worth it. But from your updated photos I see nothing about that coin that indicates it was cleaned and I feel it is a strong 64/65.

Sleak we were only high if you choose to believe the plastic .

from the pics I see nothing that indicated cleaning ,,at least not abrasively,, now perhaps they believe that the coin had been improperly dipped at the time of slabbing ,,that is something that is very hard if not next to impossible to detect in most pictures .

Personally this coin is just another reason not to have any of my coins slabbed .

I still stand with my first post. I think this is easy MS64, and the only thing I can think of is what Metalman stated. Maybe they could tell it was dipped. I think your photos are fine to actually see major dings and chatter etc for a relatively close grade, and at MS60 I think they are out of their mind. I don't have the census reports handy, but I'd be curious how many of these were graded around 64 and 65 and what the approximate value would be. I'd almost be tempted to crack it out and pay the $18 just for curiosity sake at PCGS or NGC....

I would say easy MS-64. Looks nice. I might break it out if you don't agree with the grade. You are the only one who can really say for sure on the grade.

I sure don't see any signs of cleaning, but then again I am formulating my opinion from a couple of pictures and have not held the coin in hand under magnification like the graders did. I would have guessed ms64 from the pics.
