I see MD. MD is when the coin is being ejected from the color after striking, the coin scrapes up against the die, pushing it downwards.

I hope Coop gets in on this one. I downloaded the large pic of the PCGS link Harriet H posted and looked at it closeup. The PCGS coin, to me, looks like hers. If hers is MD, then I would think the PCGS one is also. I see flat, shelf like doubling and the lettering seems thinner from the doubling. I don't see notching on either one, and I note both pieces are doubled in the same areas as one another.

I really thought I had the MD concept down pat after looking through a microscope at thousands of halves the past few years. But evidently I have more to learn.

Had I found either of these halves I would have thought them both to be MD (although I like the looks of them).

I see MD but we would need Beyond better pics to be 100%.

Please let us know the results. I just sent Coop a request to tell us what this is. This is an area of his expertise.

Can we see the obverse? And I would post it in the grading section before sending it in. It might have been cleaned.

Thank you so much guys for your help! I will send a obverse after a while, meanwhile I have a real mystery coin to solve....First time I looked at it through the magnifier I freaked out, Lincoln looked so scary for me. Plus it looks like an original smoking Lincoln, everyone is after :P
Anyways, it looks like a normal little circulated coin with a lot of scratches at first glance, but if I started to zoom it in, here's what I found. I have no idea, how Lincolns face got so messed up, but here it is.

The penny shows results of what can happen to the surface and design if a coin is put up against a wire wheel (like a grinder - but a wheel of wire). I have seen it even cause doubling like in the letters LIBE on yours.

Looks like the FS-50-1946-801-(011.1) doubled die from the Cherry Pickers Guide. The glare from the lighting is hiding the doubling on the EPU. I would like to see an image of that area with the light source 180 degrees from what you usually take the image. The "LURIBUS AND UM" should show strong doubling in those areas.

@coop
I have appreciated your pictures and many listings on DDO vs MD. Can you explain to me how this and the PCGS piece are DDO though? My eye sees flat, shelf like doubling, and the devices appear smaller. I thought these were keys to identifying MD? What am I not understanding here?

I think that they are a little thick while being reduced. E PLURIBUS UNUM would be helpful to see.

This first pic shows a normal reverse no DDR.
1946-Liberty-Half-Dollar-Reverse-DD?

The following is the strong DDR. Machine Doubling has the shelf like doubling usually in only one direction.Here you can see true doubling is separated in more than on direction.
