Oh, if I could answer your question number 1 with any certainty, I would be very happy. It is not a question anyone could really answer with certainty, as even the 'big boys' who write the forecasts for the price of silver are wrong. It is a commodity. It can fluctuate like any commodity that is traded regularly. What I would say is...if you need the money, than consider selling. If you dont? Hold onto it. As far as question 2. Have an idea what your coins are actually worth. Look on ebay for sold listings of your more valuable coins. Try to find comparative grades. Look at numismedia's fair market value guide. Knowledge is the key here. Are most of your Peace dollars 22 or 23's? Morgans 1921's? If so, those are the most common dollar coins for sale and rarely get much more of a premium than $20 unless in exceptional condition. Oh. And buy some carboard coin flips. They are cheap and an easy way to catalog coins while protecting them. Edited by jay799

Sorry, no more pictures -- all the coins are in the safety deposit box. I had a great picture of all the dimes laid out on the carpet just to show my siblings how many it was, but I deleted the picture after I sent the email. I'll have to work on getting pictures, anybody ever try mounting a coin in a holder for a higher end scanner? (I got one to scan old photos from the estate). There are a couple of 1864 2 cent pieces in G condition, but I have no idea if they are small or large motto. I will take those to an expert for sure. Odds are they are large motto... I put all silver dollars, half dollars, and any coin that I thought could be worth more than $10 in the sleeves I made with acid free paper. The rest (hundreds of Roosevelt dimes, a lot of quarters) went back in rolls. Thank you all for your input! This is my inventory of silver dollars. (the 1921's are morgans)

Welcome! I hope you are enjoying learning about these pieces of history. One thing I would caution you about is yes, use the RedBook to ID rare items (or go to musmimedia.com), but the values on that book are so overboard I don't even buy one anymore. I do recommend one for history, mintages etc. though. As a simple example, choose one of your coins, look it up in the RedBook, and then look up the sold ones on ebay. Wow, take your time, read. Invest in quality albums, grade your duplicates and sell them or disperse amongst your relatives. You have a lot to do!! Enjoy. Again, take your time and read.

I was in a similar situation a year ago, with the proceeds from the sale of my dad's coins going to my mother. I don't see anything of much numismatic value in your lists, but would still recommend selling them to a local coin dealer rather than a metals broker. I had priced his collection of modern US proofs on metals only for the estate, and was surprised to receive about 25% more than I expected from my dealer. While most of the proofs were common, a few were not.

Hi and Welcome! I would say don't sell any of the silver coins until price is at least $19/ounce. If you are in need of fast cash, sell it. It's up to you!

Yeah they worth more to a coin dealer I say then anyone else. Junk silver like that sells and is more likely to go to a collector rather then to be melted. Not that it would happen likely.
