IMO, on the coin in question the bust is too small and the letters too big to be that coin. I do agree that the letter is G, probably in DEI GRATIA

Can be the G of REGINA.

Queen Maria II of Portugal?
Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands?

Could the G be a C (in Victoria)? Either way, that letter seems out of place. On every coin I thought looked similar that letter did not match up. Because of that, there is a good chance it is not the coins below, but...

The first coin is 30 millimeters and 9.53 grams, but it is copper-nickel and not silver. Does copper-nickel pass the silver tests? The person's face matches up well, and so does the wreath thing on the reverse.

The second coin is 31 millimeters and silver, but seems a little heavy, and though the person's face matches well, the wreath thing does not appear right.

Candidate 1: Head is right, but the coin looks like silver, not CuNi. Letter does not match.

No, it doesn't.
Candidate 2: Better, but letter is still out of place.
Candidate 3: Bun is too high.

So far, I think Joseph's second suggestion is the most likely. Perhaps that 'G' is a something else that was affected by wear. Still, though...

I tried researching coins of Wilhelmina last night, but found no matches. I'll try Maria II, though.

I just did a quick search of Maria II's coins, and every one of them seems to have the bun located higher on her head than this one. Did Portugal still have any colonies in the late 19th century, or other countries that would have used her portrait (like Commonwealth countries), maybe Brazil? We could also try other time periods.

Brazil gained independence in 1822 I think. I was beginning to wonder if there was another suitable candidate for monarch besides Victoria.

Thanks all for your replies! I will try to get some better pictures up soon... maybe a contrast enhanced and negative photo will bring out the legend better.

Here's another that fits the general design scheme and dimensions, but not sure about the legend:

Haven't been able to get a good picture, but after looking at the coin in hand, the tip of the crown points toward a D. I am pretty sure this is the first D in "FID DEF".

I'm reconsidering the Hong Kong half dollar that Petrus suggested.
