I've got enough kids and grandkids, thanks! I just wish any of them had an interest in coins and PM.

Nice present coinfrog. So you have a 66 ppq black eagle and a 65 ppq small porthole. Do you happen to have high 60's ppq chief laying around to complete the 1899 series?

Dave - I actually do have such a note. It's in a CGA holder, but the paper wave is visible and the embossing jumps out. Appreciate everyone's interest, believe me.

Do you need an adopted grandkid? One that does have an interest in numismatics?

Wow, awesome! What are the 3 markings to the right of the serial number?

That little cluster is just an arbitrary device they used at the end of serial numbers back when print runs were low enough that a single letter at the front of the serial number would suffice. Beginning collectors sometimes confuse this symbol with a star.

PS - The first issue of the Black Eagles (FR 226) used this device on BOTH ends of the serial number, to give you some idea of how relatively low the need for notes was at that time (first pic). But this changed pretty quickly, and by the second issue (FR 226a), they started using a letter to head up the serial number (second pic). And it wasn't long before they began using letters at both ends out of need.

I'll add to the pictures with letters at both ends.

Great example! This transition took place over quite a short time span.
