I'd try a bath in acetone then, give it some Verdi-Care.

Nice coin, I'd fear it getting worse if I didn't try something

Any damage has already occurred.
Go ahead and treat the coin as described above.

Corrosion is too bad imho, looks like it's eaten away at the metal.

I don't think you will harm anything with Verdi-Care. It is still primarily a copper coin; the nickel (12%) is just a small part of the alloy mix.

I agree with CoinHuntingDrew, the damage to the surface is already there. VF-35 details, environmental damage

Maybe , but what does OP have to lose ? no sense in leaving it without some kind of conservation only to get worse.

I'm with CHD as well, it's probably shot. So, probably nothing to lose by trying Verdi-Care.

w Frog. Still nice for the price and you probably couldn't have touched it for that price if it didn't have that obverse spot.

I've used Verdi-Care for awhile on regular copper, zinc and bronze cents, and on some colonials and EAC; this will be my first CN IHC attempt. I don't really have any low grade C/N's to practice on. Goal with this one is just to preserve it and see if I can get the junk off -- not planning on flipping or reselling it. I'll post before and after pictures as soon as I get done.

I have this coin too, but yours seems to be in better condition! Getting back into coins after 20 years (since I was 11). What is Verdi Care? Or should I use acetone. It's very dark in color (the coin I own). I'll try to post a pic, any thoughts?
