I'm not a fan either. Don't care for the color. The left side of the obverse bothers me. Either heavily polished die hairlines or whizzed or something. Mushy strike. If I didn't already own it I would pass

This is a MS coin.

At first I thought it appeared to be a case of misalignment / ablation, especially with the diagnostic parallel marks.

Strike Doubling is present on the legends.

However, on second thought I believe this to be an adjustment strike; other thoughts that came to mind included greased collar, or a partial collar broadstrike, but the diameter does not look enlarged. If it is an adjustment strike this would explain the misalignment and the smudge or slide effect, and the heavy die file lines.

Just my thoughts.

Are those possibly striations on the left obverse? Broken (D) and on that side the reverse is weakly struck. San Fran strikes are known for having issues of one sort or another on Liberty Seated coinage of all denoms. I would not kick her out of my house. I think PCGS gave her an MS62

PCGS is looking for after mint distractions for technical grade first, then considers strike, tone, etc., for the market grade, which is the numeric assignment provided.

In this instance the technical grade is MS-63 and I do not believe it suffers from enough after mint disturbance to reduce that grade.

The first sentence says, "PCGS uses post-mint distractions to determine technical grade" and the second sentence says, "Post-mint distractions aren't bad enough to alter the technical grade".

They contradict one another with neither being entirely correct.

Strike should be a part of a mint state coin's technical grade as should surface preservation. Luster, toning and eye appeal are usually regarded as market grading characteristics.

As to the OP's coin if you only consider surface preservation (i.e. post-mint distractions) then the coin is a gem MS65 easily because the surfaces are nearly pristine; It may even be an MS66 on that basis alone. But since half the grade involves strike, luster, color, eye appeal, etc that's where it falls way short and I would say it's worth MS62 money which is what market grading is all about.

It's so different that if it's in a MS holder, that alone makes it a study in coin minting! I rather like it! It's likely a MS coin, easily would stir up discussion, and has

You guys did pretty darn well on this one. I was kinda torn at first when I saw it, but then when I spotted the MPD...that is what hooked me. Numero Uno! Pop Top for the variety! She will going to CAC along with a couple others and then it is off for sale.

Very nice, I was at MS62 before I got to the second page and saw the grade already posted, just a weak strik, very nice looking Half Dime, and a top pop to boot? Sweet.
