jpbone, why on earth are you holding this coin with your fingers that way
For shame. Even if it is a 221 year old coin do you not have respect? LOL
Nice coin.
VG-10 the reverse hurt this coin.

I'm at VG-08. Certainly no expert, but it's hard to imagine this in a Fine holder with that reverse. But overall, a beauty.

Thank you guys for the comments! I put it at VG-8 as most of you did. I'm surprised nobody pulled out the "details" card. I really like this coin even though the reverse does hold it back a little.

Yes, I touch all the large cents with my bare hands. Controversial, I know. I buy large cents from three dealers primarily. All of them keep them raw. When I say that, I mean, not even in a 2x2. One keeps them in paper envelops, one keeps them in a tray with dividers, and the other keeps them in a Dansco style book. When you ask to see one, they just hand it to me bare handed. To me, that's the way I prefer it. Of course, if they were red uncirculated, I wouldn't do this, but they are far from that. Large cents are fun to handle bare handed!

F12 obverse with G6 or so reverse. Net VG8 and a nice, smooth S-78.

jpbone, like you, I touch and handle my coins with my bare hands.
Anything below MS can and should be enjoyed and felt, judiciously of course. Its part of coin collecting. Nothing like the hefty feel of a 2000 year old roman sestertius in your hand. Same for my US Coppers.

Would love to see what else your dealer friend sold you.

jpbone, probably would pull a details designation due to the corrosion and deep hits on the reverse. for me, its not that bug a deal. the coin was circulated for who knows how many decades, its going to have some dings and I think adds to the beauty of the coin. i'd love to feel these old coins in my hand, this is why I dont slab them. I love seeing them side-by-side with my other coins in my albums. to me it seems like more of a collection that way (i guess thats old school). the only reason I dont like to handle my coins is so I dont leave any oils from my fingers on the coin. I still get that feel a little by holding it by the edges

Thanks for all the opinions guys! A rare opportunity to pick up so many nice large cents all at once may never come to me again. It is hard to find these coins in that "sweet spot" of affordability while not being in horrible shape. I felt like a kid on Christmas morning when I walked out with these. I agree with y'all at VG.
