Proposed 2019 Apollo 11 Commemorative

I can't understand why your system is blocking " Coin World" magazine online. I'd guess that 75% of CCF members use the site at least once each week. I'm not aware of any unsafe issues with the Coin World website. If your are still interested, you might give it another try? Jack

The reason why it is "unsafe" is that is has mixed secure (HTTPS) and insecure (HTTP) content.

I look forward to an Apollo 11 commemorative set! I might have to budget for a gold coin so I can get a three-coin set; which there better be one. Do not force me to get a curved five ounce coin that I am not that excited to have. Sorry, but I was not really thrilled about the curved baseball commemorative either. They just seem too gimmicky.

I wasn't thrilled with the Baseball commems either, jbuck. I didn't buy one. However, I was thinking about what an outstanding canvass a curved 5 ounce coin would be. As a depiction of the moon, I might feel differently about this issue (if it ever happens).

The Ike and SBA reverses are two of my favorites (or is it "one" of my favorites?), but the design doesn't show an astronaut standing on the surface of the moon. That's what I'm hoping this proposed coin would include. I'm really looking forward to seeing the designs that are submitted. It's another chance for the mint to develop a classic, enduring coin design. That's something that they haven't accomplished much in modern commemorative offerings.

I don't have any idea about where I'd put something that big though (5 ounce). It'll be too big to include with my collection, and too expensive to place on the living room shelf. It seems silly to buy something like that and keep it locked away in a safety deposit box.

I'm pretty sure such a set would be wildly popular, even outside of numismatics. Heaven only knows what the Mint will charge for it. Jack

I am glad you posted this here Jack, I wrote my Rep. since he was not on the list. Although the Ike and SBA have an Eagle on the moon, I certainly would like to see an American - with the American flag - on the moon motif. And I think the curved 5 oz would be a great way of representing this although I thought, as jbuck said, the curved baseball coin was just too gimmicky. I think a curved moon would be more along the lines of being artistic and creative.

As to where to put it? I would make special hanger and put it on the wall next to my chair. Why not? Even if someone got past the ever present two dogs and pistol, anyone trying to steal it would likely be of an IQ not "polished" enough to realize it was not just some sort of metal wall hanging.


Now if the Canadian mint made something along this line, they likely would put in fiber optics to light up the stars and a Venetian Glass moon buggy on the coin as well. That's gimmicky

Hey Lee! I was thinking about your "metal wall hanging" idea and I think I've got the storage issue solved. What if we bought two 5-ounce Apollo coins, super glue them together, and hang them up disguised as a DISCO BALL! Jack
