Royals Are Here To Stay

@Libertad couldn't agree more......Canadian culture .......is that like ordering a Timmy's or a Molson's in both Official Languages and paying for it with your government GST rebate. Canada is hardly a homogeneous democracy. It is more or less an ill fitting jigsaw puzzle that has no business being in the same box.
Enough of politics however! Take Royalty off if all Canada's coins and the twenty.

Just curious.......if the Commonwealth coinage continuous, what is the actual 'ladder' it will go with?

I had thought the after Queen Elizabeth II, it would go:

1) Prince Charles
2) his 2nd wife (don't know, or care, of her name)
3) Prince William
4) Princess Catherine
5) William & Catherine's oldest son

I have heard that my #2 on the list is wrong, but I don't know the facts. Anyone?

Ahhh, thank you wildflower! Reading most of the Wikipedia info has enlightened me considerably. All this time I had thought that George VI was the Queen Elizabeth's husband; now I understand that he was her father. It really explains the 'spouse' problem I had. I also should have know to check the internet first before I asked a question. Shame on me :(

Canadian culture in one word: Eavestrough.

At some point, the British monarchy became owned by the British people and the extended empire rather than the monarchy owning the people. The dirty work of politics is now left to the prime ministers and the houses while the monarchy represents the history and all that is good in the history of the British empire. I feel that people identify the royal family as our own or a part of their shared history and culture. Even here in the US, people identify with the royal family as it is where we originally came from as well. It is much easier to like the royals when they are hosting the Invictus Games or celebrating the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Britain than when they are trying to rule and tax you into submission. People like to feel a part of something bigger than the day to day slogging through of life and the Royal family represents that I think.

I agree. But the reason it is not done so much is the lack of teaching of American history in our own schools. Being a patriotic American is not the goal of the current "education" system programming our kids. In fact the sad truth is most people here cannot even name the presidents on our own coins and currency (no exaggeration), let alone know anything of our historic roots. This is the current trend and falls in line with current political goals.

I ask people all the time who are on our coins etc. Very few get beyond Lincoln being on the cent and (maybe) Washington on the quarter.

The first time I read George Orwell's "Nineteen Eighty-Four" was in the early 70s and it really didn't really grab my attention. It just seemed a little far-fetched. But during more recent years the book was mentioned in passing from time to time, so I read it again. Wow, it amazed me. For a book written in 1949, there are so many similarities in the world we live in today that have crept into place slowly and surely and without much notice.
