This thing is absolutely gorgeous in hand. Killer green iridescent toning on the rim with lots of golds/reds, reverse is the same, green/gold/coppery reds. Reverse has strong cartwheel luster (not in these pics, with juiced lighting to bring out the color.) It's also a very solid strike, great feather detail & hair detail. Couldn't be happier for 30 bucks. I think it would slab a problem free AU55.   A slightly tweaked photo to get the colors to come out. Agree looks like a solid AU-55 to me with attractive toning.
Dipped and retoned once? Probably but the coin is market acceptable.

Wait, you realize that is a B/A reverse type and not B type? If you look you should see some extra tail feathers below the normal ones. The minute I see that giant bean under the olive branch I turn the coin over to check for V44, but no luck yet ;)

I put it on my scope with both the 10x and 20x objectives and did not see any signs of the coin being a 7/8 in the tail feather area; it also matches all the other diagnostics of V83 100% so I am fairly sure. I need to get a new USB scope camera since the cheap Chinese one I had died after like 20 pictures, that way I can post what I see. My first thought was that it was a V79 but Dave corrected my attribution as the left leaf on reverse is not disconnected from the branch. I do not know of any other long nock PAF reverse, 7 TF, with the broken nostril diagnostic, beyond 79 and 83.

Check VAM-33. Neither VAM-79 nor 83 have the bean below the olive branch. Pretty sure it is exclusive to VAMs 33/33A and 44/44A. When I started VAMming I was first interested in those 1878-P long knock reverses and those are the only ones I recall having that bean.

Not sure if this would be more relevant in the VAM section or grading. I agree with the AU 55 grade. Possibly details with the large hit on the cheek and a few rim dings. |

 I throw in the towel on this one. It's got most of the features of a VAM 33, but not 100%. I think you are right and that it is VAM 33, simply by diagnosis of exclusion, but it's still weird.  I bought the coin unattributed, solely on the basis of the long nock / PAF combo. It matches all of the V33 diags except for the die gouge @ neck, which supposedly goes away in LDS. But according to the die progression, V30 is the LDS of V33, and V30 has clearly defined "extra talon" on bottom of left branch (to left of eagle's right talon) which this coin does not. V33 also does not list a broken nostril for its PUPs.   VAM 33: Heavily doubled eagle legs This coin: ? They don't look doubled, but are they? what is the mark under the olive branch to the left of eagle talons? My 1878 7/8TF is VAM-37 and has similar marks for. Can be indicators of VAM-36 or VAM-37. Mine also has similar mark at the end of the nock as well.

Yes the legs are doubled, yes the nostril is only partially broken, and V30 only shares an OBV with VAM-33, not a REV. The gouge on 33 does disappear in later stages. Most of the 7/8 TFs show some part of the original design under the olive branch and that general area of the lower reverse. I see the little nub of an extra TF too ;)

You can often find some of the weak 7/8 TFs in regular 7TF holders. That goes for VAMs 70, 79-86 (the other "long nocks") too of course
