For the asking price (whatever it is) I wouldn't touch it unless it was slabbed.

The "funky" toning around the devices is what scares me about the coin.

That type of toning is synonymous with many Chinese counterfeits.

Here is what I see. The obverse and reverse are both type 1 as they should be. The 1874 S had three sizes of s mint marks a mini, medium and large, that varied in position, so it is difficult to use the mint mark to identify a counterfeit. The date position is different on the OP coin and NGC coin, but I have seen other slab coins with different position dates similar to the OP coin.

I do not know if the coin is genuine or counterfeit, but for me the coin has enough issues to move on with the denticle missing under the date and a possible carbon spot on the chin, the dirt/toning on the coin looks staged and the photos are not very good.

Fake. My opinion. Fails in all four areas: foot, rocks, scroll at hand, and reverse motto.

I won't say fake or genuine because I don't have any experience with Trade dollars.....I know they are highly counterfeited and that I personally wouldn't buy one unless it was slabbed by NGC or PCGS.

I would not confidently buy from those pictures. It might be genuine, but I can't say with confidence

The weight is exact for a Trade dollar. How does the thickness compare to a normal dollar?

I do not like the color. I've seen many cast fakes with the same hue, but this coin is not cast. Thus the coin must be cleaned, which would have caused the funky toning around the devices. I don't want to say fake just yet as this coin could be genuine.

I'm on the fence with this one, especially because of what TypeCoin mentioned.

I would find another one, IMHO.

Thanks everybody!

Here is the story. A collector bought it raw from a trusted coin dealer he has bought from in the past at a coin show he frequented at the time. A couple years later he sends it in for grading and guess what. PCGS isn't certain either way, just like most of you.
Just though you might find it interesting.

Definitely interesting. Thank you for sharing. Filling this hole in my 7070 scares me, which is why it is still empty.

I waited until I could see raw coins in person @ ANA this year so I could find the "right" type coin, and was rewarded with a nice 1878-S with AU details (wiped) from a very reputable dealer, at a very acceptable price. I would not even consider buying one on ebay if it wasn't slabbed.

Very nice, paralyse!

I do not think I would ever buy this one on ebay. The Seated dollars, maybe, but not the Trade. I really think I need to see it in hand before making the decision to purchase.

I think I'm with the majority here: The Trade dollar has been counterfeited for a LONG time. I would shy very far away from an unslabbed coin. There just too many fakes out there.

Its scary to think that even PCGS cannot confidently authenticate a Trade dollar. At least they have the moral compass to admit it and not put a definitive label on it one way or the other. I wonder how many are out there that have similar labels.

When I went to buy my Trade dollar, I was very scared of buying one form ebay. Unfortunately, I exhausted all my other options (none at the LCS, I got outbid on a few at Great Collections, many out of my budget, etc.) so I found a very nice PCGS example on ebay and the transaction couldn't have gone smoother. Plus, it was a few points higher than most of the ones I was looking at...
