I was thinking pl, but the surfaces are just too exceptional... So my guess is very high grade Specimen. Would be interesting to see what others say about the "FLOREAT TERRA NOVA" which looks like it's been Struck Through Grease or something else PS I'm by no means an "expert" |

I wouldn't bet on it. The devices are sharp on these to begin with but the lettering on the specimens is very fine and sharp. The edge is square on many of these, because most are special strikes to begin with, compare this edge picture to oothers

Also notice the ship side of this one graded sp63 by PCGS, the third picture and blow it up , the lettering is very sharp and the strikes are really deep on the specimens, double struck 251875454437 |

My vote is PL66.
There are oodles of '49s at this grade or higher
"Dipping" is not considered cleaning...

Fields look amazing, but I don't get the die wear/weakness in the center letters."REATTE". I've never seen that before.
The rims on this coin have taken a few strong rubs and hits..
SP's show perfect letters, and the one that I have looks quite different from this coin..There are a lot of perfect 49's out there.. so don't go too deep on this one..

He's looking for about $150 cdn... I think that's quite steep to take a chance. I can't see this hitting MS66 if it's not a SP so more likely a 65 but $50 over paid. But as a SP, even 63, would be a fair price I think to have a nice coin.

It would not be a SP with the flattened letters.
I had one with the same defect that was an MS coin.
If as you think it is a MS65, then it is overpriced.
I bought a ICCS MS65 for just under $100.00 with
shipping.

After looking at it more, I'd think it's a MS65. Just my opinion, thought i'd share it. Try maybe offering him a little lower if you're still interested

That's what I might do. I was looking at his other coins as well & from far, several look like this one but when the photo is blown up, you can see that it's NOT what the photos imply about their fnish & they look cleaned. He says it's from his 'Personal' collection but after seeing the others, I'm a little suspicious.

I am no expert on coin grading but just for kicks I have been charting ebay auction silver dollars that are TPG by reputable companies. The average sale prices with shipping for the last year and a half have been, for the 1949: MS64 - $51 MS65 - $88 MS66 - $157 Hope you find this info of use. |
