I'd say it's on the slab. You can see a scratch @ 10 o clock on the obverse that's on the slab that continues on to the coin w/o leaving a shadow.

Here's the link to NGC and their photo of the coin.

The NGC photo shows pretty much all of the same large deep marks.

So either NGC scratched up the slab before it even left their facilities or the marks are on the coin.

Those are the only marks on the coin. Without them, MS-67/68 is attainable.

Can not tell for certain if the marks are on the coin or holder. It is a question you need to ask the coin owner or auction house. If I had to guess, marks are on the coin.

LOL, no. With those kind of marks, it would not even 65. I bet they are not on the coin, but I'd call to verify before I bid on it.

I think they're on the coin. The lighting is coming from ~11 o'clock and those scratches look pretty deep to have that much shadow/reflection. Scratches on the holder wouldn't be that deep or that reflective.

I agree they appear to be on the coin: significant, distracting scratches in both obverse fields and on Liberty's breast and arm. Perhaps the pristine reverse bought some goodwill from the grader but the assigned grade seems very generous.

Those marks would bother me every time I looked at this coin. I'd opine that it should sell for maybe MS-64 money, at best.

You misread my post, or I wasn't clear. WITHOUT those large marks, this would be an MS-67/68. I would grade this MS-64, but probably PCGS gave it a bump because of the otherwise fantastic eye appeal. I see absolutely no chatter.

Agree with Andrew - if the marks are on the coin, this is overgraded and does not deserve 65 money. Indeed, best to check with the seller.

I also agree these marks are on the coin. The MS-65 grade seems overly generous.

Marks like that don't normally appear on slabs.

The grade is beyond logic - 4 separate serious obverse field marks besides those on the figure.

Maybe NGC thought it was chopmarked and didn't mark down the grade even though it looks like half a dozen knife marks! Honestly, if all those marks are on the coin (8 of'em!) it's not worth MS63 money to most people.

Some of us know what the acronym NGC really means.

I've emailed the seller about the marks on the coins. I'll let you know what I hear.

The seller got back to me right away and said, "Unfortunately, the marks are on the coin."

I guess that answers that.
