You should put them in 2x2's carefully, don't touch the front/back only the edge.

If these were spent, and retrieved from a cash register, then they have been touched by the thief/spender and the cashier, at least.

True but they look real nice as of now. Most proofs found in circulation would be considered impaired proof but these still look nice.

my bet is the owner brought the set to Ye Olde Local Coin Shoppe and stormed out when he was offered face value. ext our intrepid Numiswannabe brought the set to Yu Chan Fuk's Emporia du Pawn & Chinese Takeout where he was told they do not buy shiney American Junk.
So, in the middle of yelling at his wife for buying stuff on buyoverpricedjunk.com he drops the set on the tile floor and the holder breaks open and he storms off. Mrs. Numiswannabe picks up the coins grabs her purse and spends them durring a shopping trip to make her feel better after her Hubby was so mean to her.

Well, no less likely than a thief stealing them.

I too will spend duplicate proofs, dateless buffalo and cull type shield nickles from time to time hoping someone will find them out in the free world And I almost always include a $2 bill or so in tips I leave. Nice find and

That's quite a story. You should be the one who answers people questions about what happened to their smashed coins that have to be a rare mint error.

Proof coins of any sorts in circulation are just sad in general. You never know if they were stolen or something.

Last winter I won a raffle at a coin show and won.. a 1980 proof set! My husband and I broke it for the penny, because it was exceptionally nice. The SBA and Kennedy we selectively gifted to strangers at a music festival.. intending that each time they would change hands, a story would go with it.

Proofs can be found in the wild more often then people think. When I was searching halve regularly, I had a box once with over 100 76 clad proofs in it. And yes I kept em all. Probably was a coin shops dump.

Would you not imagine that a certain number of proof sets given to kids by grandparents trying, but failing, to interest the kid in collecting end up in circulation?
