The seller does provide a PCGS certificate number in the listing and that number is confirmed as valid on the PCGS website. It corresponds to a certified PR-64 Cameo 1867 With Rays coin. That is indeed a rare issue with an original mintage estimated at only 25 pieces.

Heritage sold a PR-64 non-Cameo example for $46,000 in 2006. This seller might be able to get $59,000 for his coin at auction on Heritage, but if can turn it quickly on ebay and still get his price, more power to him.

It is a beautiful, rare coin. Call me cheap, but I'll settle for my PCGS MS-63 (non-Proof) example of this date. It cost me less than 1% of the asking price for this Proof.

If the pictures are good enough, make your own decision.
If they are not, don't offer a opinion.
Ceveat Emptor.
Don't rely on some plastic packaging company to grade a coin for you.
If you are talking big dollars then you should know about what you are looking at and if they are asking big dollars then the pictures should be better than good.

Since there hasn't been a transaction in almost 2 years, I'd be very leary of a hijacked account.

The area surrpunding the coin should have the jacketing of the PCGS holder, shouldn't it. Since the picture of the coin is surrounded by purple, it suggest to me that he must have doctored the original photo. For what purpose?

My thinking is that he may have pulled the cert # off of PCGS site and pulled a picture of the coin from another site, doctored the photo and then set up the ebay auction, hoping to get away with 59K. Why else wouldn't you show the coin in its holder and why have a purple background. Doesn't make sense. Stay away, I tell you, stay away.

I'm going to ask him to send me a picture of the coin in its holder and have yesterday's newspaper next to it and see what he says.

Here is the question I asked:

"Hi, I just saw this gorgeous and rare coin and am interested. Since this is such a high priced item, I was wondering if you could kindly send me pictures, front and back, of the coin in its original PCGS holder, sitting on top of yesterday's newspaper, to ensure it is legitimate. I appreciate your efforts."

Why wouldn't the guy show the PCGS holder when that nearly guarantees a quicker sale at a higher bid? I'm suspicious that he has a coin that won't grade, so he took that info off an auction.

Well the guy responded and said he'd send me pictures right away, so maybe it is legit after all. I'll post pics here when I get them.

GO: I guess you did the same thing I did. He sent me the same pictures, both front and back. The front is the same picture you just posted. I take back what I said earlier about this being suspicious. Still, for a 60K coin, he should do a better job of marketing it and show it in the real picture.

His response to me:

"hope you don't mind today's paper. the pics on ebay are from the heritage catalogue from the last FUN show. bidding did not meet my reserve. I blame the lousy pics for the coin not selling. thanx."
