Really rough obverse, I'd say 62 at best.

Well, here's the ANACS grade. The face has a lot of bag marks, but the luster is pretty nice, so I thought it might get a 62. But I didn't expect artificially frosted, especially since the devices don't look particularly frosted. Do you think they knocked it down a couple points because of the details grade? I sent it to ANACS as an inexpensive way to get it authenticated before I sell it, and the lower MS grade doesn't really affect the value much. I still think it looks nicer than an MS-60, but maybe that's because it's artificially frosted!

Yes it is. ANACS does not assign numeric details grades above 60, so this coin could easily have better details than 60 and probably does. MS or UNC Details would better serve in these cases and avoid some confusion as well. Here's an example that clearly looks better than 60 but ANACS holds it to MS60 for all uncirculated problem coins. It is not a good method IMO because they use the exact Sheldon numbers for details coins all the up to 60 but not over it. http://www.ebay.com/itm/1891-CC-Mor...AOSwd0BVr88m

Thanks. I didn't realize that ANACS limited Unc detail grades to 60, although I can understand why they wouldn't want to be more specific. Agree that saying Unc details would probably make more sense.

Looks way nicer than a 60 to me. I'm guessing though there's not enough of a price difference to send away to another TPG to get an Unc details grade.

I would crack it out and send it to NGC with four other coins under economy grading.

Much better than MS-60 by today's standards.

I can't really tell from your photo, but if the obverse were artificially frosted it would be over the contact marks and probably easy for the grader(s) to discern.

I don't think it would be worth cracking it out just to get another details grade. The "frosting" probably does make some of the bag marks on the cheek less obvious on the photo. I'll probably eventually just sell it as is.
