As far as storage, I Really Like Air-Tites* and there are many storage options from cabinets to binder pages that will hold them. The child gets to hold them without seriously messing up the finish on a valuable coin.

When you say commemorative, are you referring to classic half dollar commems or modern issues?

Very good photo spread GR58! It illustrates all kinds from the capsule, briefcase, small lock box, on up to small gunsafe! Super!

So question: that looks like a 24 gun safe. Did you buy special shelving, since you're not storing guns? Did you have to go to manufacturer? Also, how do the shelves hold up under the weight of coins?

That's large Ziploc bags that GR58 is using for added protection for his albums . They do not contain any bad stuff, so they're safe for coins .

The safe pictured is my overflow safe. I knew where I wanted
a safe and found one to fit. I think it stared out as a 12 gun safe.

I took out the shelves it came with. Then I cut boards to fit
and covered them with felt cloth. I still used the shelf brackets
that came with the safe, but had to go to Lowes to purchase
extra shelf hangers.

So far the brackets are holding up well under the weight? Even tho it looks like you put the heaviest on the bottom, the cases and books probably weigh quite a lot.

Also, did you do anything to reinforce the floor, or is this at ground level? I have a spot in mind for when I get a safe, but I live in a home with a walk out basement, and I don't want to ask them to try to wrangle a huge safe down the stairs. I worry about the weight of the safe, with the coins inside, on an upper floor. It's one reason I went with SD boxes for now. I want to have someone who knows more about these things look at the floor where I want to put the safe and tell me if it needs reinforcement, which would add to the cost. The basement is finished, by the way, so there's no way to do much with the floor structure without doing some tearing out and fixing.

And thanks to everyone else for the suggestions / pictures. Right now most of the coins are still in their decorative boxes from the mint. It's nothing of high value and nothing I expect to gain value. Right now it's for the history lesson/joy/experience. Maybe some day when we all know more we'll start purchasing older coins, but right now I want something that's easy to access.Lots of good pictures and ideas. Again, thank you!

Good to know about the shelves. And I agree about the big guys and weight--OTOH, the safe will be standing in the same spot for possibly decades. I have a 30 gallon aquarium that has been in the same spot for almost 14 years, no problem, but it's against an outer wall, and the pounds per square inch aren't as much as a gun safe with contents.
