Great story and great set! You chose some mighty fine coins to remember your grandfather by.

I'm doing the same thing with my type set, trying to get as many different types in one year. The main years I have chosen are 1795, 1796, 1805, 1825, 1837, 1854, 1857, 1873, 1909, 1943, 1963, and 1997.

Awesome story, and a beautiful set of coins. I admire you for your father's dedication, might you have a picture of him that you can post & share?

What a wonderful tribute mox.

On a related note, Missouri has a soldiers' record database where you can see an individual's service card. This includes those that enlisted in the Navy. http://s1.sos.mo.gov/records/archiv...oldierSearch

Wow MWC! I tried that and it worked! I've copied his record and put it with the information I already had.

Thank you so very much for giving me that MUCH appreciated lead.

It's a beautiful set moxking. My grandpa was born in the same year.

Thanks thq. Maybe you have a good reason to put a set together too. It's lots of fun.

One thing I would warn you about is that the gold for that year (maybe fore all years close to this for all I know) are really pains when it comes to copper spots.

You really have to look the coins over carefully and not be fooled by bad pictures if you are buying on-line. I had to look at about 70 $10's to finally find one that had no copper spots at all.
