Looks better than VF to me; I'd call it a solid AU. For a gold coin that presumably had been rattling around with other coins in a box it is surprisingly free of marks. It looks real, but you might want to check the weight if you have access to an accurate scale. Counterfeits exist of most US gold coins. A real quarter-eagle should weigh in at about 4.18 grams.

Beautiful coin, and a terrific find. Like Arthrene, I'm wondering what else was in the box?

Oh, welcome to the forum!

beautiful coin. It is conservatively, AU+. I have a 5 Dollar lib in similar condition graded by PCGS. This 2 1/2 dollar lib is valued about 250-275 dollar range..........wonderful find....congrats

Although that coin has a great big "WOW" factor,
if you weren't the one to assemble the shoebox collection,
I would be all over the other "plain" looking
coins to see what's there!

One of the worn and tarnished old coins you overlooked
could be far more valueable than the glitzy resident of the box.

You may have overlooked a 16 SLQ in fine, or something even better.
The value there would buy you MANY gold coins.

It's worth a couple cents. It's fake. *waits for you to slam the coin on the floor and curse at it* OOOOOHHHH, that coin? No, that's perfectly real, and was worth a lot before you threw it on the ground.

Great find, and to the boards!

How, pray tell, did it end up in that shoe box? A 1921 Walking Liberty half I can understand ending up in a shoe box for a few decades, but how does an almost flawless 1906 quarter eagle end up in a shoe box with some old pocket change? What else was in the box, a couple CC morgans, and some AU Barber dimes?

The dealer near my work has a similar coin for sale.
I'll check when I go there tomorrow if it's the same coin or not.

Pretty sure he's looking for 380 for it.

I'll see if he'll let me snap a few pics too... I spend enough money in there haha
