Look closely at the mint mark. You can see a four pointed ridge of metal that appears to be pulled toward the MM.
Good eyes and a steady hand might pull an S from the field.

You were here 9 days ago, but you left us hanging on whether you bought that other coin. http://goccf.com/t/280519My FREE opinion on this coin: Do not get this coin if you want a genuine 1909-S VDB. Here are my concerns: 1) The VDB does not exhibit the characteristics of the VDB on genuine coins. Particularly, the period after the D is too close to the D. Also, the shape of all three letters is different. 2) The mint mark does not match any of the 4 genuine positions. Particularly, The only genuine position with the mint mark that low and to the right is not slanted.

Raw coins in this state most likely would be slabbed. This looks like a plain 09VDB with a pasted/melded on S. Maybe someone can identify what year coin that S came from, above my pay grade! Doesn't seem right, said so last time. I'd walk away, fast, furiously, quickly, hurriedly, scrammo, vamoose, saianara, you get the picture, if this is selling for less than $500, guess what? The UPPER SERIF is Wrong! FAKE. FAKE!

Wow..If that is a fake I can see why lots of people get fooled. But, I do see that the VDB doesn't seem quite right.

It seems you have no knowledge of the series. Buy a slabbed example instead of searching for a questionable raw coin. They ONLY way anyone should buy one of these raw is if they can authenticate it without assistance.

I am not in full agreement with many of the concerns expressed, but I do agree that this particular date should never be purchased raw.

To me, the obverse appears to be Die Pair #3. But I do not argue with the VDB concerns.

It is very close to die #3, but I used a photo editor and did an overlay, and the subject coin's mint mark is about the same distance below the date, but more to the right up under the zero. Even so, if the reverse is wrong (counterfeit/altered), the obverse becomes a moot point.

jrwild, You were wise to check with the experts here and any doubts from these guys should be enough for you to walk away from this one.
The only additional wisdom I have is; you're not going to 'save' any money buying this coin raw. The risk/reward is not in your favor. This is coming from someone who is not a fan of grading services but sees the necessity in some circumstances. Certainly a 1909svbd cent and and a 1916d mercury being notable examples.
