Wow that has to be the king of bad cast fakes - the center is usually much weaker than it should be on counterfeits but on this one it's practically non-existent.

Instead of posting the obvious fake, maybe do some homework first. These things pop up all the time, I guess every household has one to pass along to the next generation?

We should not blast this person since they came to us to get advice. Yes, it looks fake and a poor fake at that. Why produce such a sorry looking fake that even if it were real would be in very poor condition. It has a strong date and yet the Flowing Hair design is almost invisible.

This is a modern fake as collars were not used in striking coins until 1830. I think with fakes it is important whether they were contemporary and designed to fool the public, ie rackateer nickels, or a modern fake designed to fool collectors. The former may have some numismatic/historical significance. This is just a poorly done slug. I can't imagine it would fool anyone except at maybe a flea market where someone could rip off a buyer for $10.

I have to agree with the others; unfortunately it's a counterfeit.

Quote: I can't imagine it would fool anyone Apparently, you don't spend much time reading the posts in the Counterfeit forums here. On ebay just about any coin will get bids, no matter how bad it looks because the buyer thinks they are getting a real bargain, but instead are getting ripped off. It wouldn't fool a person familiar with this coin, but most of the population is not familiar with old American coins. Quote: estimated price They sell these on a webiste in China for $1-$2 with free shipping. That means they are manufacturing them for just a few cents.
