I've never seen a Trade dollar with that reverse, but I'm no expert on this series.

Jest you must. Unless its a gold pattern coin that I've never seen, it's a fake.

The coin is a pattern Trade dollar. It appears to be a counterfeit and a poor example. Below is a genuine obverse to compare.

My initial natural reaction, upon acquiring this coin from my co-worker who had a customer use it with other money to make a purchase, was that it was counterfeit.
He saved the coin for me because he knows I collect coins.
Customer got $1.00 value for it, which is what I reimbursed my co-worker for.
I know almost nothing about Trade dollars....so here it is.
Counterfeit then...

Counterfeit then... but well worth the price paid. Great pickup, eaglefoot.

There were 7 designs of pattern Trade dollars. Your counterfeit was #2 known as the defiant eagle. Here is the genuine reverse:

What common general value is it then ?
If I took it to a coin shop....assuming the shop would even want this coin ?

Common general value is worthless, it is a poor quality modern Asian counterfeit in base metal. A coin shop would have zero interest in it.

Ahhh...ok, thanks Bio.
Good pick up for a dollar ?
Yet I couldn't even get $1.00 FOR it..lol
Not such a good "pick up" then ...
Rest in Peace

I will continue to wait for that occasion where I can post one of those finds that will garner comments like, "Wow, can't believe you found that!"
Or..."Someone paid for items with that coin?"
Or..."Amazing what people will spend to buy things when they don't know or don't care what they have!"
Guess i'll settle for silver and Wheat cents until that day...

eaglefoot I'm curious, with 6322 post you're definitely not a rookie. Even I could tell from 10 feet away that thing was fake.

At Coinguy64....
Not a rookie, no, but I really know NOTHING about Trade dollars.
Nor did I have the time to research it myself...crazy busy !
I knew my CCF family experts would weigh in in minutes to give my the quick answer I needed..
(I told my co-worker as soon as he handed it to me it was 99.99% counterfeit, just had to be sure though)

It only cost you a dollar. I think it was worth the risk. If anything, you kept someone else from paying even more.
