They're out there. Minted in the hundreds of millions, they're not even remotely rare.

The combined mintage for dimes was 146 million and for the nickel it was 86.64 million. Although not rare by strict numbers if you consider that the following year each mint for the nickel made well over 200 million and the year after that it was well over 450 million minted. Comparatively not very abundant and ripe for hoarding.

I get a penny or two, but nickels and dimes are far and few between in roll hunting.

I don't know if a "good portion" of them went to Puerto Rico, but when the first coins started appearing on the market back in 2009, they were being sold by someone in Puerto Rico that had gotten two or three bags of nickels and dimes from the bank there. For about a month he was the only source for them on ebay.

So my husband surprised me with some rolled nickels today and to both our surprise we got a 2009s. As well as a 1074s and a 1941s. Only searched 4 rolls. Very happy finds today. Still need that 2009p though.

I'm impressed mintage quantity has spread so widely - it's been an ongoing curiosity of mine why I see so few in circulation. Thanks for starting the topic! :)

I've come across only one 2009 nickel in my life, a Denver. 2009 dimes I also find to be scarce but not as much so, I've gotten 5 or 6 between each mint. The quarters are uncommon but by no means scarce, and I don't bother hoarding the pennies because they're much too common IMO.

its interesting. If you tried to evenly distribute the 2009 dimes and nickels, only one fifth of the population would have a nickel bearing the 2009 and only half would have a dime. Its crazy...

I think I gotten two 2009-P dimes and I know I've gotten only one 2009-D dime in change. They replaced the mint set coins that were in my album.

Never have gotten a 2009 P or D nickel and the mint set ones remain 12 years later.

Probably the same person from PR I bought 10 rolls of 2009-P nickels from a few years ago. Most of the coins were AU or better. Was very happy with my purchase - they threw in an extra roll and 15 BUs from an original roll at no extra charge.

I've searched over 1.3 Million nickels the past five years + and have only found 99 2009-Ps total. I find a 2009-D about every 700 coins or so - I sell the XF/low end AU 2009-Ds and keep the high end AU and BU coins for myself...
CRH Nickeloholic. 1,600,000 nickels searched in eight years! Have found FOUR complete Jefferson sets!
