Very strange surfaces. Blotchy and multicolored plus high point brass rub.
You buy some great coins, but I would have passed on this one.

83 bucks is a killer deal. I would do that all day.

AU sharpness, but she's been abused by something chemical or natural. The die diagnostics are a match but the surfaces are bizarre. Usual weak strike at K10-K11 and mushy LIBERTY, just like all other 1857 Half Cents. I'd recommend slabbing, but it doesn't look like the common Chinese fake from the no-no site as seen here (note the fake's odd rims on the obverse and reverse and compare the letters in LIBERTY between this one and OP's, as well as the position of the hair curl over the 8 in the date.)

Given the sharpness of the denticles and devices, would you say this is an early die state (EDS) strike?

AU-53. That blotchy toning looks to me like something was removed from the surface that prevented those areas from toning. Great deal!

Sure does. I know you like this sort of thing, but it's an alley cat to me.

In order to prepare the coin for long term storage I went up the conservation ladder: 1. Rinse in purified water. Dry. 2. Rinse in acetone. Dry. 3. Treat with Verdi Care. Dry. Result didn't differ much in the way the coin looks. Appears the coin was pretty clean to begin with.
