Quote: definitely something about the 5 and 8 in the date First welcome to CCF. Second, yes your coin shop guy was correct--there is something different about this part of the date. However, the point that we are making is that it isn't special enough to add numismatic value to your coin. You have a very nice condition Wheat cent, so it is good to see it in a 2x2, but it just isn't something that you will be able to retire on.

Do yourself a favor and cross that coin shop off your list unless you didn't speak with the owner about that coin . Maybe it was just an inexperienced employee .

There is something up with the 5 and 8, but it doesn't add any value to the coin. It's DDD.

Welcome to CC! Your coin shows Die Deterioration Doubling. It's a normal occurrence and not considered an error or variety. Generally, these are not even collected unless they're to an extreme level like this one:

This link has been around on the forum for nearly a decade but I still consider it one the best visual representations for distinguishing machine vs. hub doubling. Since your new to this area, hub is the one that most collectors, on average seek out. Welcome

And to prompt your ascent up and over the learning curve en route to an accelerated dexterity in this subject matter, check out an authentic 1969S 1C DDO RB($ 85,000 retail for an MS64). You'll probably fall off your seat dreaming jackpot some day if you check a $ 5.00 mint set and actually discover this puppy: http://www.PCGScoinfacts.com/Coin/Detail/37995
