My wife couldn't have cared less about whatever I spent on coins, during the whole period of a very loving marriage. (I am now a widow). Before we married in 1976, I sold a collection of about 80 Roman coins (with two gold) and an Australian equivalent of a complete 7070 set, which included 17 gold coins. I put all of the money from the coins into our first home, which was jointly owned. That collection would have been valued at something like $40,000 today. If I hadn't sold the coins, we would have been forced to pay rent, which I thought would have been a complete waste of money. Paid the mortgage off in 1984. The home turned out to be a far better investment than the coins. After we married, all of our life savings were entirely invested in her sole name. Now you know why she couldn't have cared less about whatever I spent on coins. These days, I am not a wealthy man, but at least I live in my own home, and have since re built a nice collection since we married.

Quote: As long as the bills get paid, the groceries bought, and we get our Sunday dinner out, my wife is OK with my purchases. She has her own personal spending money and neither one of us suggest what the other should spend our fun money on. We have kind of an unwritten rule not to question each other's reasons for our purchases. Sounds about right. Quote: I've always assumed that's a donkey getting its butt kicked. Nope.

She has her things she spends her "allowance" on and I have my coins.

Right to the nickel! She is a lot younger ..... called proper estate planning. One day the inventory is all hers . That said she was taken aback when I came back from a buying trip with an NGC Certified 1795 Flowing Hair Dollar for myself ( I don't collect coins , just buy and sell) The comment I got was " that would buy a decent car" , the reply " we don't need another car " .

My wife's not concerned about how much I spend but if it's in 4-figures I clear it with her first. She has a general idea of the worth of my collection. And she knows who to go to if she wants to sell it (of course after I'm gone). And barring some sort of accident I'm almost 100% sure I'll be the first to go.

My wife doesn't care to know. I'm happy to tell her, but she doesn't care. Silly woman.
Unfortunately, most of the money I make selling coins does not go to buy coins to keep for my collection. The bulk of my coin earning funds go to make car payments.
I can't wait until that ends in two years!
However, a few do make it into my collection here and there.

She's smarter than me, better educated, more successful, and way better looking. One way or another it's all hers anyway so it makes no difference.

Don't ask, don't tell. When we got married 20 years ago we setup hers, mine, and ours checking and brokerage accounts at a large bank and brokerage. I don't see how she spends or invests her money and don't care and she doesn't see what I do with mine. It avoids fights over money.
