Definitely genuine. I have seen many counterfeit Buffalo nickels and none of the markers indicating it is counterfeit are there.

Quote: Question. should I take it to a local coin dealer? Why? It's genuine and is worth around $5.00. Still a nice find from a bankbox though.

to CCF That is a nice find in the wild. No need to go to a dealer.

That is a real coin. There were also RPMs and OM (Over-Mint marks D over 'S') that year.

Quote: What looks off E&V The letters on the reverse looked off, but that's because I'm probably not used to Buffalo nickel designs. I felt stupid that it was actually real (which is why I didn't to comment at first to stoneman). Anyways, I have learned my lesson.

A Buffalo nickel is a Classic coin, so I moved your post to the appropriate section for the proper attention. Please review the forum section descriptions, so posts are made in the correct section.

A lot of the buffalo's I find CRH often gain black, brown and ash gray toning as well as alterations and abrasions on the surfaces that out of context could be taken as counterfeit markers.
